I am a new member and i have a 98 12v and a buddy of mine has an 03 common rail. My question is can we swap turbos i have the stock hx35 and he has a phatshaft 66 (on the truck when he bought it and its a little big for him). Both trucks have 5" exhaust. So am i correct in thinking that we can swap downpipes? Any help would be appreciated Thanks!!!

Keith is right, the downpipes are not interchangeable. I have both a 2nd and 3rd gen pipe in the garage. . I'll snap a pic if I get a chance.

Other prob is the compressor discharge on the 3rd vs 2nd gen. you will have to mod the turbo to intercooler piping on both trucks. The best bet for the 3rd gen is to get a cast elbow that DD/edge made for the jammer BB 3rd gen setup, and V-band that to the 35, and then also get the intercooler pipe they sold with the kit. Then it would be a direct bolt on other than dowpipe.

The 3rd gen 66 on a 12V isnt that hard to do. Shorten the IC pipe, bead roll the lip, and get some good boost rated coupling to connnect the 2 together... then for a down pipe all you should need is an hx40 2nd gen DP.

thank you guys i have almost talked myself out of the swap and into something a little more streetable.

Any ideas for what turbo to use? i had a phat shaft 64 on another truck and was dissapointed with its slow spoolup. this truck is my daily driver maybe i should just save for twins?

Actually im not sure about the horsepower. My mods are in my sig. If your not familiar with the injectors Scheid told me they are good for 150 hp when used with the laser cut Delivery Valves. Maybe someone could tell me What im close to? I was hoping to get 400 but not sure.

Im going to put it on the dyno in sep. at scheids extravaganza so i will knowfor sure. But i just got truck back together from head gasket failure and thats when the new injectors went in. Its a completly new truck but way too much fueling for stock charger so i believe im running on borrowed time. i guess i better get serious about buying a turbo.

I had a phat shaft 66 on my truck and it was a bit too big for the 12v... spool up was ok but crusing on the hiway temps were up 900-1000, was only good if you really had your foot into it, top end only! would be great for sled pulling. I had that same turbo on my 03CR engine before i did the 12v swap and it worked great, but i think the ablity to change engine timing on the 03CR was what made it work so well.

Has anyone tried the ATS aurora series? Ihave seen some claims on the 5000 saying it has decent spool up but thats a pretty big charger. just looking for something that can take the abuse of some pretty ignorant street driving. Maybe the phat shaft 64(?) if you say the 66 was too big.

Street driving and towing are two completely different things. If you're not going to tow, you can get away with a smaller turbo which will spool faster, as you won't have to deal with long-pull EGT's.

Since the truck will go from a dead stop to the limiter in just a short time (probably 30 seconds or less), that's just not enough time being subjected to the high EGT's to do damage. For the 5-10 seconds bursts of hard running on the streets, 1600+ EGT isn't a problem.

Now, if you were going to tow... different stort - long pulls with 10 minutes of climbing a hill... there's where you need EGT control.

I actually tow very little with this truck i live on a farm and we have 3 other 1ton trucks so its not really an issue. I appreciate the info i just hope this charger will last till i can get a good replacement or better yet, twins.

The aurora 5K is a really big turbo. It was designed for hp in mind. I havent heard of to many people with CTDs running them, but they are on a lot of duramax's. And there are quite a few failure reports.

But it will support a ton of hp!!

I personally dont see a huge reason to run a 64 if you didnt like a 66. there isnt a drastic diff between the two. Id personally run either a 62 or 66, depending on if I was towing, drag racing, etc.

FWIW, ive made 550hp with a hybrid 35/40 before too, although I wouldnt reccomend it or do it again!

When i Said that i didnt like the slow spool of the 64 or 66 they were both on my 03 HPCR it didnt have near the ammount of fuel this thing does so maybe either turbo would be good on this truck. If my 35 will last 3 more months im going to try for some twins. Been lookin at PDR's setup and hear lots of good things about those guys up there. hope it works out that way.

Man would i love to take that WSB off your hands but you will sell that long before i can afford it. Just paid scheid 2500$ for head work (studs, fire rings,etc... ) so im in recovery mode for a while. . lol. .

Spent 7k on truck in 2months and have still managed to convince the wife i cant afford her new refrigerator. haha

I got twins on my truck and love 'EM... the 66 will stall on you alot unless you have a manual transmission even then it still does alot unless your full out street dragging!... . go twins or a 62 or you will be rebuilding a turbo within 6-8 months depending on your driving, IMO.
