Turbo recommedations for 475+ HP

Oli filter questions revisited.

I have run the HX-35, PDR-40, B-1, PDR-50 and now PDR twins..... Here is my take:



PDR-40: Great turbo for 95% of the folks out there. Spoolup and HP gains are very good, and egt drops are excellent.



B-1: A tough turbo, no more HP gain than a PDR-40 and the B-1 does have more lag. Where this turbo shines is when you are running N20. Don't think that this turbo is indestructable as I had to rebuild mine after 7 months of abuse.



PDR-50: One mother of a charger! This thing flows some air and produces more HP than either the PDR-40 or B-1 (provided the fuel is there). The turbo has more lag than either the PDR-40 or B-1 but it is not bad though.



PDR-Twins: Best of all worlds! I wouldn't trade them for any other turbo or turbos, well maybe I would trade for a bigger set of PDR-twins :D

Turbo's

Guys I've managed to kill 2 HX40's, one on the way to May Madness last year:mad: In my opinion the limit is somewhere between 450-500 HP.



I currently running a B-1B. It dynoed at 542 HP and 1130 Ft-lbs:D It spools well and I use it for mainly towing in the Rocky Mtns.



Tried a PDR HX50 and it spooled to late to be practical for towing (8500 lbs).

The turbo is an absolute blast when not towing because when it "comes in" hang on you are going for a ride:D With it on the truck I dynoed at 546 HP and 1135 Ft lbs:D

You are absolutely correct get the PDR40 and later use it for the top turbo in a twin setup from Piers. My only comment is don't do a head, cam and twins over Thanksgiving it's too much at once.

When I started this thread, I wasn't planning on towing much at all. NOW I have a pulling truck to haul around. :p So I suppose I'll take the 50 off my list, and look harder at the B1-class chargers.
 
Wade ... ok with the 50 off the list, but substitute with J. R's 55. According to Ryan's spooling #'s, it spools @ the same RPM as my stock HX40-16, which is a great for towing.

When you can move the volume of air that the HX55 pushes, and have it spool like that, it's impressive. :eek:

The highest I have heard with a PDR40 on #2 is 528hp. PDR50 is around 550hp. The largest version of a HX55 with a 19cm2 exhaust housing is 633hp by Joe D. I think the highest on a B1 is around 540-550hp. I dont know about a B1ks or the newer versions of the B series turbos.

Is the horsepower usable? I'd want to see what the turbo(s) can do on the street, strip, or sled pulling track. A turbo that does well on the dyno may not amount to much in other uses. Likewise, I've seen turbos with too much lag for the street, do quite well in sled pulls.

Yes, I know what Pius Eberle can do. I've met him, and seen his work up close. His stuff works. The above is not to be taken as a slam, merely an observation that the real test of power is in real world applications.

Joe uses his truck for hunting trips, daily driving and on the dyno. His truck is built for the dyno first and as a driver second. Not for pulling or drag racing just as a drag truck is quite often not impressive on the dyno.



At Vegas we know Richard was about 850 H. P. by his numbers on the strip but only dynoed at about 570 H. P. + or - I can't remember the exact numbers. Nathan was down over 100 H. P. and I was down 100 H. P. We believe the problem was due the restrictive exhaust tube we were required to use, that is why Richard didn't try to rerun on the dyno.

I'm SURE the 800 would have a nicer street manners in a two charger setup, but Joe didn't go that route. His truck I guess.



Yeah, what's with these silly dyno people--don't have a exhaust system that'll vent a freight train? :rolleyes: :D :p



There is no exhaust system where we dyno. Gets rather sooty in there. :eek: :eek:
 
im not trying to steal the thunder of wade here but im going to run this stuff (check my sig) What turbo do you all think i should run. I will be running propane. No no2 im scared of it.
