So while trying to remove my turbo over the weekend to dirll and tap the exhaust manifold for a pyrometer with a power adder kit I found myself stuck.

Was only able to get 3 of 4 bolts out of the turbo. The bottom rear bolt was seized. Tried everything, soaking with PJB, Impact first 3/8, then a 1/2" impact, wouldn't budge.

Eventually tried heat (granted couldn't get serious heat on it too much rubber in close proximity). But again no go. All of them were a pain, but If i tried anymore on that last one, I was either going to round it off or break it off.

Just a very bad angle, couldnt get a socket on it clean without a swivel, but couldn't use an impact swivel, had to use a standard swivel, and the impact eventually ended two of those. Got a ratchet on it, but sheared off the extension with hand torque. Just can't seem to clear the waste gate arm/actuator to get a clean shot at the nut securely. Have to use a short socket and was making no progress except breaking tools.

Any recommendations. It looks like I am going to have to pull the entire exhaust manifold to get it out.

Not excited about that prospect.

Pull the exhaust Manifold. remove studs from Turbo/Exh,, Now put the studs back in the Holes that are the easy to Reach (Depends on setup/Turbo) then drill out the other 2 and use Grade 8 bolts and stainless Nuts. . it will be much easier to install and remove in the future.

If your just installing a pyrometer probe, don't bother with pulling the turbo or manifold. Its a waste of time.

Drill the hole almost thru the manifold first. To drill the last little bit grease the drill bit liberally and start the engine. The grease will pick up the last of the meatl shavings and the exhaust preassure will blow them our as it drills. Anything thta manages to fall into the manifold won't hurt the turbo.

Really, you could just drill the manifold and start the engine to blow the filings out with no issues. The hot side of the turbo is a lot tougher than that.

I was able to get mine out through the wheel well ( tire and wheel liner removed ) I believe it was a 14 mm wrench with a second wrench on it for more leverage. I had tried drilling with out removing the turbo but when the bit broke off in the manifold..... well. Good luck ! just my 2 cents ... . btw , when you go back together with it ... . ANTISIEZE EVERYTHING( like ky for your truck ) !

#3 x2. I have installed two probes in the exhaust manifold (one for the pre-turbo EGT, other dedicated probe for the Banks box). For both (drilled at different times), I did with engine off & cold. Drilled most of hole, then cleaned shavings and put grease on bit. Have had no problems. imho- any small shavings that might get in there, will be ejected when the engine starts, and will pass by the turbo wheel long before it gets spinning to any appreciable speed.
