I have seen somewhere posted the turbo sizes that came stock with different year first gens. I have had a 91. 5 since new and got a Banks housing for it years ago, I know that was supposedly a smaller housing for increased spool up. It was never said in the literature what size it was. I recently picked up a 93 and want to know if that one was the same as the 91 or not. I have a vague recollection it was all posted in the TDR but have not found the info yet. Thanks

the banks housing is a 14cm wastegated and the one on the 93 i belive is a 18cm or a 21cm nonwastegated. not sure what size came on a 93. My 91. 5 came with a 21 stock but i switched to a 16cm for faster spoolup.

The 1992's had 21cm2 housings. Took a long time to spool up. Combined with the inefficient torque converter, you could stomp on the go-pedal of a 1992 automatic and not go anywhere for quite a while.

I changed to 16cm2 right after I bought it.

I recently pulled the 21cm and put a 14cm on my 91, completely different truck now. I really like it. Tows alot better and good EGTs.

Jay,

Someone always has to goi against the norm. I guss your it this time around.

The 21 housing had something to do with saving the (automatic) transmission. If you hammer on the throttle, there is quite a load implied. If you do that with a big turbo, the fuel may go in but there is little power due to the lack of O2 at that time. If... if the AFC system is working on your truck's injection pump, the fuel is also limited at low boost (emission purposes). In stock form, the trucks don't go anywhere fast.

I like the 21 cuz I'm not drag racing anyone. It has a lot of lag and is doggy if you mash the peddle. I'm not worried about buring up the transmission drag racing other vehicles from stop light to stop light.

The 21 housing also (probably) allows me to make a tad more smoke at low boost for a tad bit longer than a 14.

I don't need a quick spool cuz I ain't driving a manual transmission where I have to build boost all over again with each and every shift. When I see 15 psi it's already on it's way, heading to 30 etc. etc.
