I have a freind needing help with his 2007 6. 7. He said that at low rpm, his boost is going up and down and the truck is surging. As rpm or load increase, the problem seems to go away. This truck is deleted and running a smarty. Does this sound like the turbo is going away?

Maybe the Smarty is malfunctioning???

Sounds more like fueling issues rather than turbo from my view in the recliner.....

Mike.

I don't know Mike. He said he tried all the different power levels and it acted the same on all levels. He has been running the Smarty for a couple of years now, but this is the first time this has showed up.

Your friends HE351ve sliding vanes might be sticking... the early 6. 7 vgt turbos were notorious for sooting up and sticking open or closed or part way in between... mostly something to do with the software, which can be updated by the dealer.

Likely it is ALSO time to clean the sliding mechanism and turbo exhaust housing... IIRC,there is a procedure that can be done on the truck, but also IIRC, driving the truck like he stole it once or twice (think high rpms and high egts) helps burn the soot off and might be a temp solution just to see if soot IS causing the his problem.

Thats kinda what he was thinking. The exhaust break has been stuck ever since he bought the truck. Driving it hard is no problem for him. That is how he always drives. What is the procedure for cleaning a turbo?

See, not having a 6. 7 I missed that. I'll try to remember that going forward.

I have driven trucks with that style of turbo, my big truck with the 8. 3 (ISC) has one. It just didn't come to mind this time.

Mike.

My experience cleaning the HE351vgt is with the one sitting in my workshop waiting to go on my 2005 5. 9. With the turbo removed from the truck, it is extremely starightforawrd to take the exhaust housing off and use carb cleaner and a brass wire brush to clean the sliding vanes and housing and mechanism behind the housing. most important part is to be SURE to use a sharpie or light punch to mark/ index the gear and shaft underneath the activator motor mounted to the side of the turbo. All that being said, there are also ways to clean it on the truck, just not sure myself. Bob 4x4 or sag2, both TDR members and dodge diesel mechaincs, might be able to help out here.

ALSO, since this has been an ongoing problem for your freind, he likely needs the upgraded software to help deal woth the problem... the later trucks with the newer software upgrades had FAR fewer turbo sooting issues.

Thanks, this was a high mile truck , 184K, two years ago when he bought it. The original owner said he never ever used the exhaust break, so this is some of the problem.

For the on car cleaning procedure you must have the appropriate Dtc for the wi tech to enter the cleaning procedure

Bob, from the above conversations, does this sound like the turbo to you? Are these symptoms something that you have ran into before? He wasn't sure if it was turbo or some sensor glitch.

I would like to drive it while monitoring real time with a scanner. Even a boost gauge and pyro would help to see what is going on. I have a rail pressure gauge on my crd as well.

If the exhaust brake doesn't work that sounds like he already has VGT issues, this points towards that as well (with a sight unseen internet guess).
