I was just going threw some posts on upgrading turbos and ran across a place called High tech turbo..... How do any of you feel about buying this... ..... NEW STAGE II UPGRADE COMPRESSOR HOUSING AND WHEEL - 95-98 DODGE/CUMMINS

$200. 00

For HX35W model Holset turbos

This upgrade converts your stock HX35W turbo to a HX35W/HX40W hybrid turbo.

It increases the air flow capacity of your stock turbo to match the increased fuel flow of performance fuel injectors and performance chips.

This housing and wheel mounts to your stock 1995-1998 12 valve turbos. Your stock compressor wheel measures 54-56mm. This wheel measures 60mm. This modification works best in combination with one of our larger turbine housing upgrades.

Im impressed with the price thats what is holding me up on a PDR turbo... ... figure do it yourself cant be that hard... ... . any input?

I just installed mine yesterday. I did a stage 3 kit which did require some minor machining of the center section. I had to open a diameter up . 125" to fit the larger pinwheel. I machined mine at work on a 6 jaw chuck lathe. It's VERY easy to do. If you don't have access to a lathe then any machine shop can do it for you. I removed the housing from the turbo while it was on the truck, then removed the center section from the turbo (exhaust) housing. The turbo housing never was removed from the exhaust manifold. The hardest part was snapping the snap ring back on that holds the housing on the center section. I've only run the truck 15 miles since the install so I can't really tell you how good of an upgrade it really is. It seems like it lowered EGT's a bit (about 100 degrees) and definately gave me more snap (smoke is a bit less). All in all, I'd say the KDP fix or injector install is more involved than this upgrade. For $200. 00 bucks, why not?

P. S. High Tech did recomend the stage 3 - at least for my fuel level.

I was looking more for the stage 2 trying to keep the cost down this kit is for the compressor side right? I dont understand what yoy had to machine..... I have a 16cm non wg housing now that I want to reuse...

My understanding is that there are three different kits, i. e. stage 1, 2, & 3. Stage 3 uses a pinwheel diameter that is larger than the existing counterbore in the center section. So in order for a stage 3 to fit the counter bore diameter must be opened up about . 125" Also the stage 3 upgrade uses a 6 blade pinwheel instead of an 8 blade that is used on other kits. I believe the 6 blade pinwheel is preferred for better performance. Your best bet is to have a detailed discussion with High Tech Turbo. They were more than willing to take the time and explain what the differences were between each kit.

Ok I talked to Piers and he said that I need the HX 40 I just cant afford that right now Is this HX35/Hx40 By High Tech Turbo going to give me the same results?... ... PLEASE HELP!!

No. The results will not be the same.

City Diesel sells a new Hybrid 35/40. Cost is just a touch over $600. You might try giving them a call to see if they can explain the differences between the hybrid and the 40.

HTT said that the stage III is 750. 00 for the hx35/40 and hx40 is the same price..... they said I would be happier with the hybrid hx35/40 But didnt give a reason why...

Is that $750 a new price? Does it include an exhaust housing? Just and FYI: City Diesels HX35/40 Hybrid is the same as HTT's Stage 3 (HX40 compressor housing with the 60mm 6 blade wheel) City's price is $615 or $625 without an exhaust housing.

I am not affiliated with City, just passing on info.

New HX40/16 is obviously going to be a little more doggy than a 35/40 hybrid. Especially if you keep the 12 housing on the hybrid. I think this is the reason why most recommend the hybrid over the 40.

Stock 40's do not have the best track record. Some guys on here are still running strong though with stock 40's. Who know's? I think the most important thing when running any 40, stock or otherwise, is to keep the boost within the efficiency range of the compressor, 36-40 psi depending on who you talk with.

Give the same conditions, a hybrid 35/40 with the 16 housing and a stock HX40/16, I think the 40 will still move more air. That means a slower spoolup, lower EGT's, and more HP.

Cooker I just talked with City Diesel... ... . They said that the Hybrid will outperform the HX 40 at bottom and midrange but would be close to neck and neck on upper Hx 40 a liitle better and the EGT will be better with the 40 but will have more low end lag with the 40 so... I think I will get the hx35/40 hybrid for 650. 00 and no core charge I can keep my stock turbo just incase... . thanksfor the tip on City diesel... ... Rick

Yeh I know, Cooker no problems... ... I just dont want to change my down pipe and the cost of one of Piers is just to much..... City also said that the hx40 will bark more than the hybrid... ... Im not so much in breaking hp records or anything but I think now that the Hybrid is a more realistic way to go for me especially cost wise.....

It is definitely hard to beat the cost. I hope it works out well for you. Good luck with the new turbo and let us know how it woks out for you.

Don't they use one bigger than stock?

Its probably a 54 mm or 58mm the HX40 are 60mm its basicaly the same as the HTT and City Diesels set exept that, I think that Piers mod's the oil flow somehow... ... . The HTT and CD setups The hX35/40 are 60mm.....

OBTW might be sooner than expected for me I'm hearing the turbo more when its winding down after shutting engine off... . Not a whining either more like a growling:eek: :(
