SPS 66...need info on surging

Impressed with Royal Purple 15-40

When I bolt on my twins, I have a auto..... So I need to get rid of the stock trans cooler. Instead of bolting an after market trans-cooler somewhere on the truck, what would happen if you went with a deeper trans pan that held extra fluid. Does the stock cooler really "cool" the fluid or is it just cycling an extra amount of fluid around. I have been told two stories, one... dont worry about adding any cooler just get rid of the stock one and you'll still be fine. The second... dont even think of trying no cooler, you have to have one somewhere. If I'm reading correctly TCI has a pan out now with a 4qt. extra. captcity. If I'm right, would that be plenty of extra fluid to not have to worry? Any thoughts here would be great... ... ... ... THANKS

No cooler?! Are you nuts?! Yes, having an extra 4 quart capacity trans pan is a good idea for extending the change interval and to gain a little extra cooling, but with no cooler, once the fluid gets hot you just have 10. 5 quarts of REALLY HOT FLUID! AND, it will take that much longer to cool the extra fluid.

IMHO, you should have one of these in addition to the stocker.

I thought it was a bad idea, but I thought I would toss it out there and see were it would land. I'll give you this, CPittman, that is a pretty trans cooler. I'm almost sure who is selling those and I'll pass. If a guy didnt have time to sit down and sourse out all the parts that might be the way to go. I'm sure he has alot of time and effort in just outting that "kit" together. I'll put a cooler in for a third of that cost

I hear ya - go buy the Super Cooler directly from B&M for 1/3 the cost... source some hose and some fittings and wire that bad boy up...

Ummm... The "cooler" you're talking about loosing is the fluid/fluid heat exchanger, right? (say right) The advantage to this heat exchanger is that it warms up the trans fluid when it's cold out and helps maintain the trans temp when whistling down the Interstate when it's -15. Don't believe me? Take a look at this. And when it's "hot" out it will take that hot trans fluid coming out out of the T/C and "cool" it to whatever the cooling system is running at.

My trans temp gauge is plumbed into the line between the trans and the block mounted cooler. When the T/C is locked the temp is usually around the 140-160 temp range. As long as the fan is in place and the clutch is working it will cool well enough for the elevation and terrain you will be driving in (flatlander!). The only time I had the trans temp get high was climbing the big hill (low speed) in Casper National park with a junk fan clutch while towing a heavy trailer. Then all the temps got high.

Still not happy? Go buy a BD. :p

Hey Eric, your take a look at "this" part of your spanking there, had nothing to do with warming the fluid or maintaining a temp when its cold out. I am on a half of a cup of coffee so far today but if anything that TSB was about not being able to warm fluid

That TSB (TSB 21-03-95 Rev A) is for bypassing the cooler when ambient temps drop to -15 F. Dodge seems to think that cold temps combined with a cooler will result in the freezing of the transmission oil in the lines. The bypass kit is designed to send hot oil right back to the transmission, keeping it away from the cooler.

Put it underneath...

According to DTT, You need the cooler. I had seen a post were the owner of twins had relocated his Liquid to Liquid cooler to the front of the engine, underneath.
