Twins w/ stock turbo

I was thinking about twins this morning, and considering the reduced cost of twins utilizing the stock turbo, like the Kendrick system (with external wastegates) and the Arctic Air (no ext. wastegate).



If the TST w/ Twins program fueling ramps from 4psi to 12psi, and will toast the stock turbo in short order, then why would the stock turbo hold together in a Twin configuration?



The stock turbo is on the top, mounted right to the manifold. I'm thinking it would let go just as fast as the stock turbo would by itself, right?



Anyone here with experience, could you please explain? I'm looking forward to being enlightened.



My wish list has expanded to SPS66, Kendrick Twins, or BD twins.
 
The stock turbo in a twins configuration is wastegated to usually around 20 psi. It doesn't pop because you're bypassing a big part of the exhaust and it isn't being driven that hard.

i have thought of making a next set of twins (with the pac brake between turbos) using the stock hy9 and the stock manifold for my second truck. the waste gate hole could be opend up to flow a lot more and still use the stock flaper. I bet 400 to 450 useable rwhp.

the other set just works so well just needs more fuel. ;)

So when does the failure in the stock turbo occur? It's above 20psi? If the TST fuel is "all in" by 12 psi, wouldn't that be enough to pop it if you're on a high setting?



Also, with the Arctic setup, there's no external wastegate. How the heck can all that exhaust (500+ hp worth) move through the stock housing?

Mark at tst claims he has never had a stock turbo fail. If you block the wastegate from opening you will over speed the turbo and cause the failure. I had the stock turbo on with the box, before I put the b1-03, and it is in good shape and had been on 9/9 many times but the wastegate was opening at 28 to 30 psi.

the artic set up does have high back pressure, they say upper 60's psi with lower 50 psi boost but it does work without failure, you cant tow with setup at 500+ hp it is more like 400+ I guess, then egt's will climb.

I pushed my stock turbo really hard. The diffrence is I was alyways sure to have the wastegate working properly and I never saw more than 35 psi. The egt's were scorching hot but the turbo is still in good shape.



As mentioned, the failures usually come from an overspeed condition and if your wastegate is working properly that shouldn't happen. You have to remember just because you have max fuel delivery at 12 psi that doesn't mean you have max fuel at 12 psi. The TST program simply multiplies the amount of fuel the ECM is giving you so if the ECM gives more (which it does at higher boost) the TST gives more proportionally. Max fuel comes much higher in the powerband.

Sorry 2 butt in here fellas but im looking at the tst and trying 2 get as much info on it as possible! What did u guys do with the exhaust with the stock turbo still in place and what air intakes work well with the tst and the stock turbo?
 
JCleary, Think about how a Duramax can get over 6-700+ HP on a stock charger? For one they use NO2, and second they are using special external and internal wastegates to control their max boost or turbine drive pressure, They are making that HP at a little over 30 lbs. If they go over 35 or so then they will pop for sure. It all relates to turbine RPM that kills turbos. If you can efficiently gate the smaller turbo to a reasonable drive pressure they will rarely fail. I ran my stocker hard but never over 35-36lbs, even the SPS I have set at a mild 45lbs while others run theirs at 50-60+!! I dont know how Relentless is making their kit work without external WG's but they do work.

If you want to push a stock turbo hard with the TST leave the stock boost elbow in it and open up the exhaust. 4" with a straight through muff is adequate for the air a stocker will flow. Do something on the intake side as well. At minimum swiss cheese the airbox but a BHAF or high flow filter setup would be better.



The stock boost elbow will raise your egt's a little on the milder settings but it will allow you to hit it hard and fast with out popping it, it's a trade off.

Has Chris thought of adding a small gate like a 38mm to the kit just to see what happens... ... like to an R&D truck! I know the drive pressures as we talked about them but don't know what boost the big charger is making.

they must give you a second gen manifold because it lookes like the secondary turbo is in the middle of the manifold not up front, like a 3rd gen manifold fliped over. but I could be wrong!

The artic air twins does use a 2nd gen ats manifold that is turned up side down. I would post pictures but i cant figure out how to make the file smaller.
