Competition O-ringing question.

Competition Advice on External Wastegate on Twins

3rd gens must be made to sspool before fuel will be added by the ecm. the MAF sensor kills them with the 40's... Laggy pigs.



Keep the stock turbo and use the 26 or 22cm HT3b with it and a good wastegate. It'll run like a recently violated primate ;) Until you get over 550hp the stock HY will be fine. After that there are other options in secondary turbos. The limitation is it must spool as well as an HY because of the MAF sensor.

I have an HT3B that I plan on using in the spring. But I'd like to use a 22cm.

Any recommendations on where to get the smaller housing?
 
Thanks guys. Looks like we're all on the same page as far as getting a 3rd gen to spool and getting them lit on the bottom end was my major concern.

Jim do you now of any one who is running a 32 divided inlet on their 3b,A guy at a turbo shop up here in Michigan told me it might spool up better because it is a twin throat and it places the flow better on the wheel. i thought about trying it but the housing is so big that I barely could sqeeze it between the frame rail and the block... :) Thanks I am still in the learning stage on these trucks.

I have run those on twins and they work fine. My first set used a 32 divided.



the divided housings only work well on the manifold. the manifolds are divided to match them. they use the pulses (placed properly) that come from either side to help accelerate the turbine. you lose the benefit when you run through another charger before the 3B.



they work as well as the undivided housings but they are heavier. The point is that they don't help but they don't hurt either.

Hey Mark thanks I always learn a lot off this site in your first set of twins. what top turbo did use and exzaust housing ? did they spool alright.

also to measure drive pressure, do you put a boost gauge hooked up between the two turbos in the pipe. Sorry all the questions. :confused:

Everybody asks lots of questions ;):D



I never put a gauge on them but I had costomers and friends do it. You will run a vacume when you deck it. shortly there after you will spool the 3b. then you will build until. . if you size you WG and housings properly ... you will see about half of your boost above 35psi. Under load you will have positive pressure to the front of the secondary the higher the load the faster the response to change in throttle. above 40psi is where you start to see the pressure on the front of the secondary rise (it takes 350+ hp to crack the WG and flow enough to thoroughly light the 3B).



It is possible to use a small (22cm) 3B housing, a big WG, and a large 35(14cm+) and make the 3B do most of the work. IT would make a hell of a top side for a 35 setup.

Na, no big deal, I was there once too just over 2 years ago and in the same place as most that want to do Twins, went from a stock 35 to Twins and nothing in between, if I had bought a PDR 40 back then I'd probably still be running that setup!

When did you go back to the internal gate set-up? What kind of drive pressures are you seeing? I'm having Piers do mine next month and that was my only concern but your WAY beyond where I'll end up fuel wise so maybe my concerns are unfounded.

No I didn't go back to the internal, it's always been like that from day one! The old Twin setup used and external gate but as you know the PDR Twins use an internal one, works much better for me and allot less places to leak, more compact and it drives the B/B to the moon, to the point were it doesn't need to run harder as the air temps out of it are just beginning to get up there.

Good to know Jim. I really appreciate all the work you've put into testing the twins but what's really great is you and all the others have taken the time to post results. I've spent the last 2 weeks going thru the archives and there is some excellent information to be had there.
