It seems like with the new 275's......

am interested in a gear-splitter overdrive on my 96 3\4 ton 4x4 ext cab with . 410 rear. Any info re. mpg inc with the rpm drop at 75 mph???? Information presented so far has been about gear vinder. The U S Gear would allow overdrive in four wheel drive mode.

I installed a US gear in my 95 5 speed 4x4 and am quite happy with it. I cant help you with the rpm in your with the 4:10 mine is the 3:54 It is in the 1500 rpm range at 65 mph . The only negitave I have is from the passenger seat as the split shift makes a slight clunk. I was quite concerned with the idea of a splitter that would go between the trans and the transfer case. I know that there is supposed to be a lockout to prevent o. d. and 4 wheel from engaging at the same time, but if they do it could be very determental to the driveline.

I was told that the US Gear unit works with 4WD engaged because of its placement beteween the transmission and xfer case.

I have the US Gear OD unit on my early '91 (see sig). I was HOPING for more effective gear splitting with my 727 3 speed AT, but the loose torque converter prevents that under all but a small percentage of circumstances, like a REAL twisty upgrade under heavy load and low speed - and a forced top speed in 2nd OD of about 45-50 mph. A tighter, lower stall TC would REALLY bring this setup to life, and it's NO criticism of the US Gear unit - it has been flawless in over 100,000 miles of use with significant towing of our 8,000 lb fifth wheel. It DOES "clunk" pretty noticeably if shifted at higher road speeds, but I normally anticipate usage, and do most in-out shifting at 35 mph or less, The US Gear unit reduces engine rpm by 22 percent, and in my case, moved my top speed from a 80 mph maximum up to 95 mph - that with a 3. 07 differential.

Gary, glad to hear you like the US gear. Is there any increase in the noise level in cruise? I've been thinking of getting one.

Noise level is REDUCED, since the engine is loafing, compared to before - also the fact that the OD can be left on at will works great for me, since my Cummins will STILL pull our fiver up a 4-5% grade in OD at 65 MPH, no strain! The Gearvendors unit is worth a look as well - had one of theirs on a '85 Chevy 1 ton van with good success, and the newer ones are even better, since they use their own fluid supply and have the 22% OD ratio instead of the former 33%, which provided no gear split... You won't go wrong with either unit...

rs:
I put a US Gear on my truck about 40,000 miles back and it has made my towing much easer. The -clunk- we have can be reduced with proper timing in the shift. I have gotten fairly good at the shift. The noise is not that bad with shift timing.
With the running noise I have it sounds a lot like a road racing car with a gear whine. Not that bad but you can hear it.
The RPM at 2000 is 80 mph. The most used shift for me is between 3rd and 4th. I do use 5th over in towing but only on flat ground.
Hope this helps some.
By the way, I drive a 4x4 and their is no problem with unit.

Just a word of caution. Some wrench jockey somewhere stripped the plug on my aux. I suspect it was at DC because they told me to take it to a tech at US Gear to check because it looked to them there was a leak and they would not touch it. So here I am having to get someone to drill it out and tap it so I can check the fluid level.
