Last night I filled up my truck with some of the new ULSD. I also added about half a bottle of Power Service (gray bottle). The pump only let me put $50 in, so I ran it twice. The second time, it put in about 5 gal and then turned off. When I was about to pull the nozzle out of the filler, my tank "burped," and sent diesel fuel out of the filler. Is this some sort of reaction between the ULSD and the power service, or could I have a problem with the vent on my tank? Also, the fuel was green. Is this a dye they're using to identify it as ULSD?

Yeah, I sometimes have burping problems too... :-laf :-laf

Never have seen the slightest indication of reaction between fuel and PS additives - and I've been using the PS stuff for about 15 years now. I also doubt any greater likelihood of reaction with ULSD than the previous stuff...

Color of diesel fuel - at least with the old stuff - has always seemed to vary between various brands/locations - I've seen nearly clear, yellow and green - dunno what we'll see in the new stuff...

I wouldn't worry about the "burping" - just a random incident...

Powerservice is completely compatible with ULSD - in fact see prior posts when it was pulled from store shelves (viz Walmart) to be sent back and relabelled that it WAS compatible—cause this was much cheaper nationwide than just allowing them to send out NEW labels! I do think the ULSD behaves differently - I'm thinking that's your burp. So far I find my 12V runs quieter and I'm UP about 1/4 mpg??

The "compatibility" of PS was related to emissions issues and various exhaust system devices, such as catalytic converters - NOT with characteristics of the ULSD fuel itself... ;)

Yes, ULSD is died green, somewhere between gatorade and lime koolaid green. Haven't heard of any mileage increases with ULSD like DieselDog states, mostly losses, I loose about 1. 5 mpg. As far as the burping goes, I guess you just have a rude, ill-mannered truck! :-laf

I have lost close to 2mpg and also ULSD make is a royal PITA to top off. Stuff foams so bad it's unreal. I can put about 5 gallons in from when it first clicks to having the fuel all the way up the fill neck and it takes a long time to do that. The old fuel, I would put maybe 1. 5-2 gallons.

And then my lift pump starts leaking.

So, poor fuel mileage, leaks, takes forever to fully fill up... . and this garbage is good because????? I'm actually thinking of selling the truck because of the crappy fuel mileage and ridiculous price for fuel. Gas is $2. 25, diesel is close to $3. How the hell does that work out?

It's the man tryin to keep us down... #@$%!

ULSD isn't dyed green or any other color... that's just the way it comes out of the refinery. I work with ULSD every day, and I haven't noticed ANY foaming at all... even less foam than LSD.

For you guys that have lost mileage, try changing your fuel filter... ULSD cleans EVERYTHING from the refinery tanks to the tank trailers to the station tanks to your fuel system. It all stops in the filters at the pump  or the fillter on our trucks... by now, everything should be settled down, tho. We were changing filters in our fleet weekly for the last couple months... they're staying clean now, tho.

I too work with USLD at a liquids terminal/tank farm. The only diesel that is dyed is high sulfur diesel thats used for farming/military/industry type engines and comes in various shades of red. When running ULSD you will lose approx 1% fuel efficiency. Also keep your eyes peeled for any leaks on your fuel system. Because it has less than 8 ppm sulfur the truck racks have to add lubricity solution with ULSD. I have filled up twice with it and havent noticed any foaming or leaks

The burping of the system is the vent on the tank. My experience is when I'm filling the truck, just rock the bed around and this will help the overall filling experience. I'm not too sure if I've even gotten the ULSD yet here in Pacific NW, but I'm not looking forward to it... I concur with BigEasy and TexasRam3500 in that this fuel is supposed to clean out your entire system. I had heard rumors of the fuel companies having to do quite a bit of work to ensure that their systems were clean for the transporting of the fuel. However, I'm figuring that they all said screw it and just transported the fuel without concern for the end user. I think the advice of replacing the filters a few times over the next few tanks of fuel is a great idea. This way, nothing gets too clogged up...

I'm not too far from Nate but haven't noticed any excessive foaming. I wonder if it's the lubricant (or lack of) used by different distributors that's causing the foaming?

Mike

Meijer in Oxford, MI has the ULSD now. Just filled up last weekend and the color was almost clear. Didn't seem to foam as bad as the "old" LSD either.
