If you look at an indy car or F1, you'll find 4 or 5 valves per jug. As they have to run through an RPM range.
If you look at Dragsters, like Pro Bikes, you'll find 2 valves per, even on Jap motored bikes that started life with four valves, but those engines opperate at HIGH RPMs and that's were they make power.
All things being equal, a road going diesel that doesn't rev all that hard is likely more efficient in a 4v configuration than an otherwise comparable 2v set up.
Hard to compare the Rams as other changes came into play with the advent of the 4v head, electronic engine management, etc.
