No Comment... I know alot of us smoke intentionally, me being one, as well as some other people whom post in here. I am not taking sides, but do we really need to be so ugly to each other? Can't respect other people's opinions without a fight ensuing? Just a thought to ponder.

-Chris-

Ya my apologies for stooping as low as fatcat did, by calling me a gov't stooge... shouldn't have sunken to his level, and I was just saying to someone today how I appreciated that the people on the cummins forums had respect for eachother without the catfights... one of my poor moments, what can I say, I lost it... . I'll edit the post.

Charlan, I agree sometimes it can be fun to smoke some dumb ricer. The bigger picture point was that the tons of black smoke from dump trucks, semi's, garbage trucks, etc etc will be greatly reduced, benefitting all. I know high performance dieselers aren't the main contributor to the emissions problems. Either way, the joy of smoking some ricer out will only be around for a while... so enjoy it while it lasts ;) Again, my apologies to the community for stooping to fatcat's level... . I have a lot of respect for this forum and the cummins forums in general...

I was referring to FATCAT's forcible argument and the manner in which he made it, and the fact that his ignorance on the matter was shining through. Last i checked that was the meaning of eloquent... if you would care to correct me then be my guest.

And if your going to question my knowledge on the subject matter and automatically assume you know more, i would suggest you might want to step back a little and perhaps understand that you are not the authority on this subject. I went to school, I spent a full semester dedicated to this subject. And just where in my posts can you note my so called lack of knowledge?

I've just accepted the fact that I would be fighting a battle that cannot be won. I think you've come to the wrong place to win support, but there is no harm in being informative. Although most seem to write off informative as some tree hugging greenie at times.

Rhickman, no offense intended... it was hard to tell from your post if you were referring to my post as ignorant, or fatcats... . and if you read my comments, I said if you were agreeing with me that's great, although I certainly wouldn't call fatcat's post eloquent..... and when I say eloquent I mean facile... which his post was not... ;)

While I don't question your knowledge on the subject... you also should step back with your comments as you don't know anything about my education or background either... . not challenging your knowledge but one semester hardly makes anyone an expert in anything... .

Glad we agree on this topic. Not trying to win people over, just post some information on the inevitable change that's coming... which is a good thing!! :D

What I can't figure out is why Europe seems to be after a totally different bi-product than our own epa nazi's. They have a sulfur ppm of 350 currently compared to our 500ppm but their main concern is co2 where our epa's main concern is nox. European diesel also has a 51 cetane rating. I personally would rather run bio-diesel to help support the amercian farmer anyway and it has no sulfur and has a high rate of lubricity to begin with. But I have no dealers in my area. If the republic of california gets their wish there will be no diesels in the entire state. I can't remember where I found the read on what they were proposing but it would make it almost impossible to own a diesel there. I think for the most part they want electric cars and bicycles. Time to start stocking up on fuel additives. I've also read the stuff that Vaughn posted and I tend to agree with his post entirely. I will pretty much always take the word of an independent testing company over our EPA. And tests have proven that our ozone and air qualities are already improving much to the dismay of the doomsday preaching epa nazi's who need something to sustain their jobs.

Mcoleman, sorry these posts are backwards... . there is more biodiesel in MO than any other state!!!! One of those places HAS to be near you..... Get a few 55 gal drums =] I've got 3 in my garage, been running bio for 3 years now with no problems. It's a nice way to give the finger to foreign oil and the middle east;) Here's the beginning of the list.....

So MFA has it available by the drum. I wasn't aware of that. I donate mucho dinero to those folks for horse and fish feed anyway. Might as well add something else to the list. Are you burning it straight or mixing it? B2 or B20?

Oh I didn't mean to assert they have it in drums... I live in FL and buy it in drums from my local supplier. I would assume you could get b100 in drums from any supplier though if you ask...

I ran straight b100 in my VW TDI for 25,000 miles, and then dropped to b20 after the price of b100 went up quite a bit, for a total of 60k on bio. I have run b20 in my mercedes since 2001. Great stuff. Really cuts down on the smoke and smell, and I like that a portion of my fuel costs to go the American economy and american farmers rather than the middle east and contributing to foreign oil dependence... It's not always directly supporting american FARMERS these days, because most biodiesel now is produced from waste vegetable oil rather than virgin soybean oil... since the gov't dropped their $1/gal subsidy they were paying the biodiesel manufacturers. No problem though, it's still made to ASTM spec, and the recycled bio typically has a cetane of 50-55 compared to 46-49 of virgin...

It appears that it is only being carried on the eastern side of the state. Seems pretty reasonably priced as I called over there and asked about it but I still haven't found a supplier in this area. I would have them deliver me a bulk load to the farm if they would carry it. Not even Springfield is carrying any but they said Neosho might be. That's about 80 miles away. They don't answer the phone.

Lightman, I never intended to belittle you, i was sticking up for myself. I was merely poking fun at FATCAT's attitude. It seems to be prevalent with much of society.

There was an ad on the news about a local guy producing a conversion kit for biodiesel. Seems interesting, but i still am a little weery since i spend a lot of time on the road in places and biodiesel, from what i can tell, isn't always readily available. It isn't quite feasible yet to be carrying around 55 gallon drums of it in my truck just incase. Though perhaps i could entertain the idea if it became more plausible.

I certainly would like to recirculate money into our own economy rather then line the pockets of petro companies with foreign interests. What's involved with the switch to biodeisel? PM me with some informative details when you have the time.

:D If I could convince the Wife that we need to drop the cash for a new 500 gallon tank I would be in business:-laf I wasn't aware that there were any changes needed to run B2 or B20 which is what I had in mind. I think B20 would work pretty good without affecting fuel mileage like the 100% does.

B20 or less requires no mods. Cummins statement is that b5 is safe and anything higher 'they haven't tested'... However, plenty have and do run b20-b100 without problems. Bottom line, you can easily blend 20% or less without doing anything. Rhickman, most likely the kit you saw was to convert an engine to run on WVO(waste veg oil). That type of setup requires a separate wvo tank, heaters, and a switch, so you can start on diesel(or biodiesel), switch to WVO once it's reached the proper temp/viscosity, and then switch back to diesel before shutdown. Major pain in the butt, but the kits are able to be viewed at www.greasel.com or maybe greasecar.com too. Biodiesel is a much simpler setup without any worries of injector coking, etc etc that are associated with running WVO.

We threw 10 gals in my friend 2000 cummins and filled up to make b20, and the smoke was noticeably reduced and a smoother/quieter idle.

In reality, most engines can run 100% biodiesel if they have synthetic fuel hoses... the main concern is the natural rubber in the hoses and possibly seals degrading over time... . with blends as low as b20, there are NO worries. Oops, spoke to fast. In temps under 5F, antigel is necessary with b20, because it has a higher cloud/gel point than dino diesel. Anything over that, good to go ;)

Yes I looked into the WVO burning kits and it sure didn't seem like anything worthwhile to me. I'll have to check into the availability of bio, i haven't even seen it at all here, unless it is unadvertised. Is, B20, b100, b2 the relative solution ratio of bio with regular diesel? Just to clarify.

Yup, sorry, b2 = 2% bio, b100 = 100% bio... etc...

WVO seems a little crazy to me also, and I'm not that keen on going around collecting wvo from restaurants. . Although, many people that have the time make biodiesel at home (homebrew) using wvo, and it's very cheap. A friend has made his own biodiesel from wvo and run 30k miles strictly on his homemade b100, which he produces for a total cost of 36 cents per gallon

:--)

RHickman, I dont see any suppliers in Utah, although there may be, this list isn't always totally up to date. Looks like Phoenix may be the closest. Many distributors do deliver though, depending on how much you get.

Guys, here's a list of where/how to find biodiesel in your area.

Biodiesel Distribution Map

As you can see, it's very popular with farmers in the midwest. Here's an interesting blurb about biodiesel's potential impact for Farmers.

Farmers and Biodiesel

This site has great info on biodiesel, although there are a ton.

Mcoleman, maybe your wife will relate to some of the benefits of biodiesel and suprise you? Show her Darryl Hannah's biodiesel site, it's 'pretty' LOL. I think male or female, we can all relate to wanting to support american farmers and the economy, rather than the middle east and foreign oil consumption. The fact that biodiesel makes your exhaust smell a lot better, boosts cetane, and improves lubricity to your engine is an added bonus. That extra lubricity will sure be nice for those older cummins that have sensitive lift pumps... :D

As you can see from the above article, we still don't know everything. Should we cut down all the Oak and Pine trees?(read the article)

And California has a bad habit of making Environmental decisions without weighing the long term effects. (MTBE) Turned out the cure was worse than the disease. Not only that but all these supposed improvements tend to cost much more than . 20 per gallon. Reformulated gas is still costing Californians. If you are going to make a change make sure its the right change, not some knee jerk environmental reactionary change.

All that said, no one I know wants dirty air, it comes down to cost and believability, we don't trust the environmental wackos, just like the food police, eggs are bad, wait eggs are goood, you get the point. When the scientists don't agree, we don't believe! It comes down to trying to sort out biases.
