Upgrades after JUICE & Exhaust?

Thanks, TDR Staff

I just got one too! Oh boy!

Preventative Maintenance Videos

This is my first diesel and full sized truck.....

So far I've put on a 4" exhaust and just got the Juice W/ Attitude. In order to continue to make this thing purr, what should I do next?

Will a new intake like the AFE make big a difference?

With the Juice should I worry about toasting the transmission? Do I need a Torque Converter as a friend has suggested?

I am thinking about another 3"-4" of lift. Will this resurrect the death wobble I cured when they replaced my ball joints, track bar, etc?

Who makes a good Dodge lift kit?

What about new injectors?

Lay it on me, having a ball so far... . (thanks EDGE!) Oo.

And I am now down to 1 beer, and stumble across THIS!!!

AFE PG7 w/Torque Tube... ... YES, it will make a difference.

transmission, YES. TC and VB minimum. I had some almost damaging wear from an Edge EZ on #4 setting, and I baby it, prior to upgrading my transmission. I have an ATS Stage 3 www.atsdiesel.com Check em out, cured my problem.

I did over a year research on trannys, before buying my truck. ATS, I like it, would recommend and buy again. Also look at BD-Power and DTT. The big selling point with ATS is TC (HUGE surface area) and the Commander. If you have the bucks, go stage 5. I will be upgrading this summer, God willing, along with BD-Power Twins. Love my ATS, best money spent. Had to de-tune my truck for winter, keeping the shiny side up. :D

As far as a lift, check these guys out: www.jackit.com

Also T-Rex, though they have changed their name. I think it is Kroeker Racing, awesome suspension, but like $3-4 grand. I'll stick with my Tuff Country, does the job, and keeps the geometry straight. I ain't out there chasing trucks on the BAJA, just going to work and the store. Oh well, such is life.

Also, you should seriously consider the Bilstien 5100 shocks, trust me. :D

I would stay with 4 inches tops in the lift dept. I like Tuff Country, I have their 6 inch lift, I am not sold yet, but get many compliments, and jealous looks. Want to buy a 6 inch Tuff Country lift?

Injectors, check out www.jennettyracing.com

$700 for a set of 80hp injectors. Best price you will ever find, perform flawlessly. It does take some time to get the corp deposit back though. ($700)

You will also need a turbo. www.bd-power.com Look at the Super "B" Turbo. Do a Google search on it for the best price and availability. www.jegs.com usually have them for around $1100 delivered, and in stock. Good path to a "Twins" upgrade. And a bolt on unit. Or just get the "Twins", what the heck. I had em ordered, but got tired of waiting, so I went with the single turbo for the time being.

And you will need the ATS exhaust manifold. If you go "Twins", you will get the right ATS exhaust manifold with the kit. The single turbo manifold is different from the "Twins" manifold, just to let you know. You need the ATS manifold to keep EGT's low, and help with turbo boost. The stock exhaust manifold is a weak link in the Cummins when bombing, fix it.

Also a good set of gauges. I like the old fashioned gauges over the electronic readout, all in one units. But, that is just me. I have transmission temp, turbo boost, egt and fuel pressure.

Speaking of fuel pressure, you may as well look at a FASS unit. I have the AirDog, works flawlessy. You will appreciate it when you are in a WOT state of mind. The fuel filtration is nice too, up to 2 microns, keeps those injectors safe.

Sounds like we are on the same page. Hold on to your wallet!

Thank God It's all paid for!

Bd Power makes a bulletproof transmission and torque convertor.

As for the intake you added more fuel so yes you need to free up intake you will be happy with the afe stage 1 proguard 7

Wow! Thanks Mike,

Nice truck pics. Our trucks look identical with the exception of color, the lift and the nerf bars.

I printed this off for future reference as "available cash" rolls in.

I'll have to relax with the Juice until I upgrade the transmission. I drive around in the 1-3 settings most of the time, 4-5 are visited during those " see ya buddy" moments when I'd rather see someone in my rearview mirror.

Upgrades will be made over time making sure to avoid this kind of stuff as much as possible: :-{}

Great info for all us greenhorns.

No problem, I love talking about these trucks! And I am still in the upwards direction on the learning curve with all of this stuff too. Learn something new every day.

After you do the intake, I would seriously recommend the transmission upgrade, it will make things much easier in the bombing department. And I second what Kyle said about the BD-Power transmissions. I found a shop in Indiana (Dave's Diesel in Angola) after my ATS install, that does allot of BD trannies, along with ATS and some DTT's. Man, they were getting some insane numbers out of the Dmax and Cummins with these BD transmissions. They are bulletproof from what I saw if done right.

I would definatly give them a look see. And it should really be your next mod, start saving your pennies! Once the transmission is done, the skies the limit!

For the intake do I get:

A - The Magnum Force intake that comes with that cone shaped filter and the heat shield and then connect that with the torque tube?

Or...

B - I keep my current filter set up, but replace the current stock filter with the rectangular proguard 7 filter and then repalce the exisitng tube with the torque tube?

I am kind of confused. I was looking at Diesel Performance SHops site and the Stage1 and the Proguard 7 are two different products.

I am assuming Plan A is the recommendation.

Also, how does my stock tube differ from the Torque Tube? They look like they are the same diameter. Does the TT have internal fins that speed up the air flow or something??

Thanks Again-

Steve

Steve,

If you are going to bomb, you may as well get the AFE ProGuard 7 Kit w/Torque Tube. Your first pick #1, is the route I took. Helps the CTD breath better, lets the turbo sing and looks pretty impressive under the hood.

As far as the T. Tube, it has no restrictions, nice and smooth and same diameter as the factory tube. Now the factory tube has built in restrictions, like the fins and some pretty rough bends for the air to get through. With the addition of the torque tube, you will also get a more pronounced turbo wine. Gives it that jet engine sound going down the road.

DPP and Genos garage sell the AFE intake kits, you can also find them on ebay for a good price. Some of the other vendors that are sponsors of this site also sell them and will price match, or beat a lower price. So shop around.
