DTC Codes - How often do you check?

I am in the USAF and currently 500 miles away from home attending the First Sergeant Academy at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

My truck ran great all the way here. The problem started the day after I arrived. I started the truck and drove about 15-20 seconds when I noticed a stumble/miss; the CHECK ENGINE light came on and about 1-2 seconds later it stalled. I turned off the key and restarted; the truck immediately started and ran fine the rest of the way back to my room. (about 2-3 miles) This morning I installed a new lift pump ($139 from Cummins) and new fuel filter. The truck starts and idles great but misses/stumbles when driving. The CHECK ENGINE light went out after several start cycles and has not come back on.

I do not have a fuel pressure gauge yet. (on order) I have been running DD2s and a Power edge module since about 10K. The truck has about 50K now. I purchased the truck new in June 99 and have not had any problems with the truck until this.

I would really appreciate any ideas/help that you can provide.

Thanks,

Russ

I hate to say this but it sounds like the injector pump. Have the ECM code read and it will tell you for sure. It should be covered under the 100,000 mile engine warranty. Be aware the dealership will probably deny warranty because of the power edge. If they deny warranty replace the pump your self and save about $3,000 over dealers price. buy the pump from cummins for alot less.

Not much help to you with your technical difficulites, but more USAF here. I'm an IP on the E-4B out of Offutt. We have a number of Ram/Cummins owners in the squadron. At least four that I know of. Our shirt is down there at school with you. Tell you his name if I knew. We only had him a week or so before he left. Idaho Native from the squadron also posts here.

Wowzy! You guys must be reservist, right? I never saw an E1-E5 with anything new that had 4 wheels.

Some EZ/PE's did this once it got cold out, but they fixed the problem. You might give the guys at "THE EDGE" a call and see what they say... 1-801-476-3343.

Could be a plugged injector?? Could be water in the fuel too?? Drain some fuel from the filter or wherever you want to tap into the system at while the truck is running and pour it into a glass jar... . be careful. Let it sit a while and if there is anything in the fuel, you will se it. Regardless of what you find, I see no harm at all in pouring a big bottle of fuel treatment/injector cleaner into the tank.

Get those gages in ASAP, even if it means paying a little extra for fast delivery.

Let us know what you find, good luck. I know those Air Force bases have nicer community garages than most custom mechanic shops in the civilian World ;) so you shouldnt be hurting for tools and a place to work, but if you find yourself in a pinch, give us a hollar.

If you need asistance let me know. I live 90 miles to the north-east. My daughter and grandkids live in the area, so I could use it as an excuse to visit.

Check your PM.

could be something with the COMP , did you have it on a setting higher than level 1 when this happened ?

if you cycle the key on and off 3 times , leaving the key on the third time the odometer will spit out the codes . post the codes you get .

i doubt its the injection pump , they usually just die with no warning .

Chad,

The guys going through the First Sergeant's Academy are E-7s (or E-7 selectees) through E-9s. Definitely not E-1 through E-4.

Update

First, I would like to thank those of you who responded. Your advice was very much appreciated.

The problem turned out to be my power module. (Diesel Dynamics Ultimate Power Module(UPM); same as Edge Comp) Based on the advice of one of the responses to the original post, I disconnected all the connections from the UPM and my problem went away. I then reconnected the MAP connector only; no problems. I then reconnected the data port connection; problem returned.

I called Diesel Dynamics and they are going to mail me out a replacement UPM and return receipt for the bad one. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM DIESEL DYNAMICS!!!

I hope this information helps other TDR members.

Thanks again,

Russ

Mopar-muscle

Mopar-muscle,

I learn something new on this site everytime I use it... Thanks for the info on getting the codes from the odometer... . Just tried it to see what happens and all I get is "P doNE. " I assume that is because I have no codes, but I'd be interested in you confirming that..... ;)
