Anybody burning used motor oil? Theres got to be a good way to filter and make use of our old oil. May not be eco friendly, but there's plenty of it, and its not going to turn to crisco when the temp gets cold.

Filter to at least 10 micron , smaller is better , spin on 2mc , centrifuge is down to . 5 mc , then PH test , water ect .
about 2 gal per tank 35 .
You should fill in the sig , in the user control panel to get the best answers , different yrs have different requirements .

whats the easiest way to filter the oil at home? What about a good lint free paper towel to strain through? I would want to take the soot out before sending the oil through my fuel system. I do have the Airdog filter as backup.

A centrifuge is best, but I think coffee filters would even work. The dieselcraft centrifuge take most of the soot out any used oil, but take a couple passes usually.

I don't think you'll ever get the soot out. That's pretty small stuff. If well filtered and used in small quanities you should be good.

I've burned some in my '02 but stopped after losing a VP44. Don't think the used oil had anything to do with losing the pump but I'm not taking any chances these days.

I have an indirect injection chevy. Runnin the ve pump. It has a steady diet of 50% waste oil filtered to 12 micron before it hits the truck. The truck has a 10 micron filter and in the past 1 & 1/2 years I never had a problem. Starts a little harder. Won't start below 10 degrees!

No need to filter it, why go to all the trouble if you use a clean catch container? Remember the oil is filtered already when it came out of the sump  I do let the oil sit for a month or so and don't use the last quart out of the bottom. That's what I've always done. Burned quite a bit of it in my 2001 that way, still had original VP when traded at 87,700 miles. The soot is fine enough to not hurt anything. I would however avoid burning used oil in common rail engines especially 2004. 5 and above.

I put in 4-8 quarts to a full tank of fuel. Can't tell it's in there by exhaust smell. Just put 8 quarts in the '98 today.

Filtering is sooo important. I would recommend using 2 or 3 stages. Course Medium then fine filtration.

If you don't filter it then what happens when your truck is not being used? The heavy stuff precipitates to the bottom of your tank and becomes sludge.

I agree. Filtering is the most important thing. Hydraulic return filters is what I use. 33 micron into a 12. My once red fuel is now completly BLACK. My 99 truck don't seem to appreciate oil in the fuel. One quart in the tank makes all kinds of blue smoke. One thing I did notice in my chev is heating the fuel to engine operating temp makes a much cleaner burn.

A Frantz TP filter like I have on my truck for lube and fuel filtration is a sub-micron filter, and what I would use - but I tried burning used engine oil a couple of times, and just didn't like it. It dirties up the fuel filter noticeably, and supposedly isn't the greatest stuff to run thru the fuel system, injection pump and injectors.

I know lots of guys do it. even on the big rigs - and I hate to toss or otherwise lose $30 or so worth of usable energy. Folks around here with oil heat often pour used engine lube in their heating oil - and the local NAPA store takes the used oil they accept, and use it for that purpose.

i use a 750 luberfiner now. i am going to change to the fleetguard cintrifuge because more of our used oil is coming from hpcr's and the 751 cartrige does not remove enough of the soot and the frantz is to slow for me

I changed the oil on my '50 Chevy today, but I don't plan to burn that used oil. That's because my old Chevy's 216 doesn't even have an oil filter!

has anyone heard of using used hydrolic fluid? i work at a john deere dealership, and have access to large quantities at a time. any help would be appriciated

I've read of some doing that very thing. I'd invest in a good filter system, something like a DieselCraft Centrifuge (do a Google, bout $200,).

Be prepared for the old "it's not designed to burn" comments. If you can score a batch that you trust as clean, give it a shot, say 25%, if no issues, work you percentage up, free fuel is looking mighty tempting where I am.

Good Luck

well i have a 10 micron filter, and i plan on using that for the filtering system. the used oil is not that dirty. the filter i have is designed for a john deere hydrolic filter, and i think its good enough, but i'm not sure...

Having been in the class 8 truck industry for 28 years and Fuel Preporator/AirDog since 1990, I have gotten a little insite on fuels, fuel filtration and bypass filters. Gulf Coast Filters of Gulfport, MS has a paper towel filter system that should work well for the filtration your are asking about. I have personally seen a series 60 Detroit with no oil changes for 500,000 miles using this system, as it was disassembled for inspection at Coventry Detroit Diesel in Nashville, TN. All parts mic'd as new. The oil stays clear using this bypass filter system. Getting one of these filter system and pumping used oil through it will remove virtually all particulates that could damage your injection system. I would highly recommend it.

I was told by a well known VP44 builder that burning filtered motor oil will not affect the VP except that it will stain the insides dark colored.

Either way, I'm switching to amsoil 15/40 synthetic, and plan to run it for as long as the oil analysis' come out ok from using the bypass filter.

Have run a LOT of used motor oil through my system with no known problems, but the syn probably will be recycled because they say it doesn't burn very well.

Yes don't burn Amsoil, I tried it in my '01 and even with the engine at operating temps on a hot summer day it would puff some blue smoke with just 2-3 quarts in the tank.

Thanks for the info. Was considering trying 1 or 2 quarts of used syn mixed with 65 gallons in the aux tank, but who knows what kind of cruddy deposits it would leave in the exhaust tract. Better to take it to a recycle center and not have to wonder about it.

One year I got a little crazy after changing fluids and dumped the used front diff, rear diff, gearbox, trxfr case, and the changed motor oil (delo) ALL in the aux tank and filled the rest with diesel. For about 2 weeks while driving & even sometimes while it was sitting in the pkg lot at work id leave the pump running circulating it through my "conditioning circuit" (I like to call it) which consists of a strainer, then the oem lift pump, a frantz tp roll filter, then back to the same tank. Then, turned the valve and started mixing it into the main tank and eventually burned it all. Could not tell a difference in performance, but you could detect the smell of burning oil in the exhaust. Saved having to take it to the dump station though. . :)

None of that was synthetic that I know of anyways. .
