Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Used or Rebuilt Engine?

I got the news from the repair shop today. My truck has the dreaded block number 53 and has a 4 inch crack in it. They found a used engine with 129k miles on it for $3900. The estimate to get it installed comes to a total of $6800. The other option is a rebuilt longblock for $6000 ($2100 more than the used one, but has a 3 yr warranty). I am struggling with where to go from here. The truck is probably only worth $11-12k in good running condition. I have invested a fair amount into it with the add ons in my signature block. I have a '99 NuWa Hitchhiker II 5th wheel I used to tow, but now have it semi-permanently parked in a mobile home park and living in it during the week. I'm contemplating whether I really need a diesel truck any more. Are there other options I'm overlooking? What do you all think?

Have you looked at the lock-n-stitch fix? I think that is what is is called. That way you spend a lot less and keep the truck or at least sell it running. The last option to sell it as is. Even find a 12 valve in a school buss cheap like my friend did... . his 24v was running and he sold it (trying to build a slead puller). try craig's list?

I have read just about everything on this, since I have a "53" that is still intact, and be forewarned that the probability of long term success sounds about 50/50 at best. No knock on the company or process, just the nature of cast iron material being difficult to repair structurally.

What's the cost to do this kind of repair? I have a 4 inch crack. I'm sure there are limits to how big a crack can be to be repaired with this method.

I just replaced a 99 53 block with a 2000 Mexican block 150k on it $1800 bucks, look for a better deal. my 2000 block had the ckp and tone wheel fit and runs perfect . Before I installed it I changed the tappet/oil pan timing cover front and rear seals total $4800
Lock and stitch has failed on a lot of 53s cracks have moved to a new spot.

Yes if you want to "solve" this problem permanently the Lok & Stitch isn't the way to go.



I would keep Craigslisting and looking around for a used 24v long block and swap it in, depending on where you live they can be reasonably easy to find.

Yes unless you want to open another can of worms dealing with different and incompatible ECMs, PCMs, wiring harnesses, and other unknown problems.

On edit: Since your truck is an '01 six speed it is an HO version. To get the same power and performance you are accustomed to you are limited to an '01 or '02 HO six speed engine.

What is the differences in SO and HO engines? I always thought the engines was mechanically the same except the injection pump and ECM was different on the 2 not counting auto trans and 6 speed differences. Not sure about the PCM on either.

Bob,

The hp and torque ratings are significantly different. The injection pump and ECM are different as you said but also some internal differences.
