AT a light Suddenly the truck LURCHED then stalled. I started it up and now the idle LOPED bad ... ..... real bad allmost like the cylinders were fireing in groups of three (Kinda sounded cool ..... for a millionth of a seccond) until CHECK ENGINE  . I go to leave the light and 1/10th of the power I had only secconds ago.

Fuel filter is brand new

I have 14 psi fuel (& Wide open normally I have 8# with the box on drag mode)

Rule out those items.

I don't have my books with me as they are home.

CODES

P 0743

P 0500 (VSS Sensor)

P 1765

P 1693 (Check code)

The 1765 worries me.

BTW No Tach during all of this.

I cannot remember the codes I had, but I did experience a similar problem. Long story short, the crank shaft sensor was bad because of a crank problem. Ultimately I ended up with a new short block.

lsenus Good call but with my pusher pump setup I did tale a peek @ both of them and My preassures do work out to be exelent (as above)

Anyone have code descriptions avaiable as I don't have my books handy?

P0743

P0500

P1765

P1693

Tim,

Sorry to hear about your woes! Running again! What will be your next step. If it can come and go like that, it may be electrical. Crank position sensor??? or what???

Good luck, let me know if there's anything I can do.

Matt

Yeah I am gonna get a Crank Position Sensor tomorrow.

SSiefert Confirmed it with his rig.

As for the trans loosing all communication ... ... PCM!? :--)

Scotty said it best on one of the Star Trek movies:

"The fancier the plumbing, the easier it is to muck it up"... ;) :p

Sorry to seem like a tech-hating old fart - but the more "technically correct" these engines get, the harder and more expensive they become to trouble-shoot... I love my new truck - but it's a far cry from my purely mechanical - and simpler old job...

I'm CERTAINLY not ready for '03 and beyond... :--)

Good question!

Rocky, as far as I know:eek: These codes are for vehicles using the OBDII system which I think the 2002 models still use. It probably says somewhere in your owners manual if the 2002's use OBDII. Let's get together one of these days and swap some lies.

sounds like CPS (crankshaft position sensor) mine went awol a few months back. symptoms: sometimes hard start, stall (rare) NO POWER!. always associated RPM needle bouncing and then stopping altogether with this problem. It was fixed by dealer under (govt. mandated) emissions warranty! truck is 2000 CTD w/5 speed 4*4.

O. K I read BOTH books allmost cover to cover and there is no mention of a crank sensor. HOWEVER The Cam sensor is barely covered in the books. Does the cam position sensor affect the tach?

Plus I don't think the 01's have a crank sensor at all? I remember a discussion with KatDiesel mentioning the 01's do not have the KPS (Or tied into the PCM nor Ecm anyways)
