Ford Story...

anyone want to trade 24.5 wheels/tires for 22.5 lo-pro's

Friend at the gym just bought one (VW Toregage (sp) ) I will see it this Friday. I understand that this new V-10 diesel is real high tech. Anybody know anything about them? He says it is real fast and gets 20 something miles per gallon. Cost him $64,500 and it listed for $66,000 so he got a $2500 discount. Not bad on something that they will only import 1000 of into the USA this year. Please tell me what you have heard about this vehicle.

Thanks

Full air ride suspension with three height settings adjustable from the cab. :D Heard some good things about the diesel too but I like my inline.

I saw one the other day in Norco on I-15 with Nevada temporary tags. I wonder if someone did some out of state shopping since they aren't selling them in California.

$64K could just about get you two CTD's though. :D

There we go.

I stand corrected.

I coulda swore VW came out with some sort of wierd "W" Diesel motor for one of it's concept cars awhile back...

No longer my friend. They now have NEW toys to play with.

Ahhh the Phaeton. Sic sick VW indeed.

The Phaeton W12 is available in limited quantities at select Volkswagen dealers

Engine W12

Horsepower (SAE) @ rpm 420 @ 6,000

Maximum torque, lbs - ft @ rpm 406 @ 3,250 - 4,250

Then there is the best quote EVER!

"V10 Turbo Diesel 10 cylinders of pure, unadulterated go"

Horsepower (SAE) @ rpm 310 @ 3,750

Max. Torque, lbs-ft @ rpm 553 @ 2,000

According to Car and Driver:

"... Volkswagen will sell the Touareg V-10 TDI later this year, and it's pretty likely to blaze a trail that will be followed by other large diesel-powered SUVs. Big trucks are a natural fit for diesel power, as a glance at the track sheet will confirm: 6. 2 seconds to 60 mph, 14. 7 seconds through the quarter-mile at 93 mph—in a 5880-pound off-roader capable of 24 mpg! In every measure of acceleration, it not only beats the gas Touareg V-8 but also outruns its cousin, the Porsche Cayenne S. The big VW lunges away from a stop with the force of a Gulfstream G5, or maybe a Cigarette offshore racing boat. The point is that despite its brisk acceleration the Touareg never seems lithe or nimble—always brutishly powerful.

Throttle response is instantaneous under most conditions, thanks in no small part to its twin turbos, each of which benefits from variable-nozzle geometry, with the vanes that direct the exhaust flow onto the turbine being controlled electrically, not pneumatically, for greater precision and quicker spool-up. It's never hard to remember this is a diesel. It makes 6 dBA more racket at idle, and it sounds like a big rig when pulling gently away from a stop. That it does all this while averaging 3 mpg better than the gas V-8 version on all three of the European driving cycles is as compelling a case for diesels as we can think of... . "

I have read the TDI V10 is pretty impressive, too bad you would have to buy it at VW dealer, and worse have it serviced there. They have a real bad reputation for sales and service. VW is in pretty bad shape right now, thier bread and butter cars golf and jetta have a very high problem index and have been far surpassed by the Toyota, Nissan and some of the American compact cars. They also held off too long on the big rebates and missed alot of sales. Thier sales numbers are down big time compared to previous years. Around here they really limited the availabity of the TDI golfs and jettas and the few they had they were trying to charge a premium. They make a great small diesel, but the rest of the package and the dealer network is pathetic. Sorry to sound down on VW but I have had some bad experiences with them.

A true W engine has 3 cylinder banks. 10 is not evenly divisible by 3 - therefore, one would have 2 banks of 3 cylinders and 1 bank of 4 cylinders. What VW is calling a W engine isn't.

The VW "pseudo-W" engines are actually "double V" engines - they are two of the VW narrow-angle V engines built on one crankcase and tied to one crankshaft. Therefore, they have 4 banks of cylinders. Again, 10 is not evenly divisible by 4, so one would end up with 2 banks of 2 cylinders and 2 banks of 3 cylinders. I know VW has talked about building a V-5 (as an engineer, that makes me cringe!) that could be part of a W-10, but that's not the V-10 diesel engine under discussion.

The VW "pseudo-W" engines that have made production are a W-8 (Passat, Touareg and Phaeton), a W-12 (Phaeton) and a W-16 (various prototypes). Note that all of the cylinder configurations are divisible by 4 (the number of cylinder banks).

i did see a cut away of that w8 engine at the toronto autoshow this year. i don't think i'd want to have it. the conrod are about 1/2" wide and so are the conrod bearings. way small

VW has gotten some of its bad rep from ignition systems and window regulators. The TDi has no ignition system.

My Jetta TDi Wagon gets excellent mileage and seems to be pretty well built. It has much more personality than most Japanese cars and the torque makes it much more enjoyable to drive than any other 4 banger I have ever driven. The body is really sealed up well underneath but, unlike my CTD, you need a mirror to see it.

That said I don't see myselft spending 60K on a VW.

is pretty cool only problem i have with it is the $ and that its a totally aluminum block WITHOUT LINERS , yes thats right aluminum cylinderwalls that have some sort of plasma something coated on them kinda like nicisil (spelling is definately wrong!!) or dirtbike 2 stroke engines etc... . so its basically a throw away cylinder block... . you waoul dhave to get it recoated if you needed a rebuild or get soem machine shop to fit some cast iron liners into it... . In europe that have the 5cyl tdi available for the toureg i'd rather have the inline 5cyl myself. . in fact one of the vw motorsport racing toureg's has a 5cylinder tdi in it...

99% of the vw dealers suck and the mechanics suck at the diesels. . if i didn't do all my own work on our tdis i could have one as i would have no GOOD service available... plus at the vw dealers you can't dicker on the price as with any other dealers... argh. oh and you cn't order a vw speced the way you want in the usa... only in europe etc, here in the us if you want certain rare options or color combos etc you have to wait till vw mkaes or might make gets shipped over on a boat and then the dealers have to trade out for it. . etc... what ever they ship to the us is waht teh dealers can sell . . so no custom orders . . sucks. . other then that i love em and i couldn't imagine living with out our vw diesels. . and i love the older vws especially the rabbits ,jettas, sciroccos etc. . later
