Found an oil leak at the vaccum pump on my 2000 quad cab. I am going to look at it some more this evening but dealer wants $1300+ to replace. How big a job to replace and can I get the part from Cummins instead of dodge ($1050). I have a service manual, just not with me here at work.

Thanks in advance

Vacuum pump

If oil is coming out at the vac. pump it could be just the gasket between the pump and mounting flange or it could be power steering fluid. Doubt that you would need to replace the pump. bg

Do a search on vaccum pump. If I remember right there is an o-ring inside that wears out and causes the pump to leak. O-ring is cheap. If you do a search some of the post even had the size of the o-ring on it.

Vacuum Pump Leaking

I also had a vacuum pump seal leaking, and the dealership stated that the pump had to be replaced $1400. How did you resolve your problem and do you know if I have any recourse if the seal could have been replaced?

Get a hold of CPFF he knows as much about this as anyone.

The only thing to watch out for on buying the o-ring is that they can be slightly different. The o-ring measures different sizes depending on which pump you have. Now all pumps are interchangable(i. e. the cases are the same). But, the internals are just slightly different. How much different I'm not sure, but they are different. I believe there are three different pumps, but I'm not sure.

But, verify this by someone who knows more than me.

I feel good advice has been given. It strikes me as very unlikely that the pump needs to be replaced. A little legwork tracking down the right o-ring will make you :) and make the dealer out to make a fast buck :{ .

Thanks for the info. It will be a couple of weeks before I can work on it. (My 97 jeep lost a rear diff carrier bearing and is currently occupying the garage). $30 is more affordable than $1300+.

You guys are great Oo.
