Anybody have experience with the vacuum pump leaking oil and changing it or having the dealer replace it? I have 41,000 miles on it and it is now dropping a spot of oil the size of a quarter on the ground. I checked closely and don't think it is the messy oil breather crankcase bottle that also is covered with oil residue. The vacuum leak appears to be coming from the middle bottom of the pump. The truck is under warranty, the dealer will look at it Wednesday. Thanks.

under warranty, have the dealer replace it. They will put in a new vac pump. Mine was out of warranty so I just purchased a new seal and took the truck to a local mechanic to have the seal installed. seal cost me $16. Labor was $200. So far so good!!!!:) A lot better than the $1500+ nightmare that the dealer charges!

thanks for the info. I wonder if the pump is available from Cummins or aftermarket for lots less. Some of this stuff is incrediblely expensive.

cummins vacuum pump parts # is 3923114, don't know the price but i am sure it would be cheaper than the dealer, but if your truck is under warranty let them worry about it...

if it's not under warranty it can be changed (even though the dealer says you have to buy the whole unit). They told me the unit cost arout $1000. I replaced the seal for about $3 in my 98'.

I sent an e-mail to John at -- email address removed --. He sold me a new seal for $16 including shipping. I did a search on TDR for vacuum pump leak and found that John had the seals for sale. Sorry john, but I dont remember your last name. It was not the double lip seal some have talked of using, but so far its working great.

thanks. Dodge is fixing it under warranty. I am not sure if it is the engine warranty or the extended one but they pay for it.

vaccum pump leak on 01 also

Took the jitney to the dealer last week to have t- case fixed for the 4 th time. Classic. Now this week they put new yoke and seals on and then the tell me they are gonna put a new T case in next week when it comes in. DC is paying bigtime on this ongoing leak. 4 times to the shop and all is for the same problem. classic. Vaccum pump is ordered and going to be replaced next week also. I bought the pickup with 20000 miles and now has 41000 on it. The 7 yr 70000 warranty is out because i bought it used? I purchased extended warranty thorough bank and it covers the v-pump, but they are going to put the t-case replacement under the 36000 mile warranty? I think they make their ruled up as they go and run it to you when they feel like it

In all fairness to Dodge, the truck has 41,750 miles on it and the only other thing that was replaced was the lift pump, problematic on many '01's. My fuel pressure gauge alerted me to a problem so the truck could be scheduled for that pump replacement without any real downtime and at home. If you don't have a FP gauge, get one it is the best $100 you will spend on your truck. Even though the engines and trucks can run many hundreds of thousands of miles, I don't want to pay for big unexpected repairs and will likely run the truck until around the warranty is up. I don't mind payments if I know what they are each month and can budget for them but I do mind large expensive unexpected bills. I ran my '91. 5 out to 143,000 miles and after the engine 100,000 mile warranty I had to buy a new fuel pump for $350, a new injection pump for $1650 and had the air conditioner changed to the new stuff for about $500. It was charcoal grey and when the paint faded, peeled, and was generally history I decided I did not need to drop another $3000 in paint so I bought the '01. The folks that get 400-500,000 miles out of a Dodge pickup are paying for maintenance along the way that could probably buy them new trucks every so often. In my opinion the engine is so much better than the rest of the truck but what is the difference if stuff need replacing whether it is the engine or other things. It all costs money. Driving something under warranty especially a distance from home base is peace of mind.
