now I'll have to track down some of the double lip seals.

please let me know if you know of a source off hand.

Rick;)

Well I have not taken mine apart yet, but I'm starting to think that it's not really a a double lip seal, more likely a single lip seal with a wiper. #ad

illflem:

thanks for the help, when I get a seal I'll pull it apart.

w-cummins:

sorry for the typo, when I get on a roll on the keyboard things are not always checked.

I have a customer with the name "Cummings" and I seem to leave the "G" off for them, but they remind me as well.

thanks for the seal info, I'll pm CPFF and see what I learn.

Rick

w-cummins, a wiper type seal isn't normally used for a rotating shaft but for an extending shaft such as a hydraulic cylinder. The wiper does as the name implies and wipes the shaft clean to protect the seal. :)

The seals I'm calling wiper seals are show-en in the above picture and are'nt I guess a true wiper like the pre-packing on a hydraulic cylinder. The wiper or what ever you want to call it keeps the dirt/contamination out of the lip. So I guess the real question is, are the stock seals a TRUE double lip seal with 2 springs?? one on each side of the seal or like the above seals. I'm not sure why they would have specified a true double lip seal is there liquid (or oil and vacuum?) on both sides of the seal in the vacuum pump??

William... .

i would enlist the help of a friend whendoing the re-install of the ps/vacuum unit back onto the engine--I just did mine yeserday and it was a PIA---chris

RDHamill--if you're talking to me --no leak in that area for me--I've had a leaky steering box for quite some time and installed the AGR rock ram hydraulic assist system---that's how I know about the reinstall of ps/vac unit----chris

Hey Chris, Putting the pump back in was the easiest part of the whole project for me. It took me only 5 minutes to maneuver the pump back in place and start 1 bolt by my self. The hardest part was removing the PS line from the back of the pump. Must have taken me 20 minutes:mad:. Seemed like the darn thing was welded on.

Well i guess I should have posted a follow up on the seal. My stock seal was not a double lip seal nor a seal with the non spring loaded second lip, it was a SINGLE lip seal, and as far as I can tell it also was not a Viton seal either! I replaced it with a single lip seal like the stock one but I did take the time to get a viton seal ( I'm not sure that was worth the trouble though as my truck and stock seal had 250k miles on them) and it was NOT even the source of the leak!! The Dam factory when they put the pump together pinched the o ring outside it's grove and that was what was leaking! Had I know en how the pump was made I would have seen that the seal could not have caused the leak where mine was pouring out the oil!

I just went through the same nightmare with my Vacum pump as well. Both D. C and Cummin's wanted 1300CAD for a new vacum pump.

After dooing some research on this (TDR) and the Cummins Tech guy I found out that the steering pump and the vacumn pump should be attached on the Bench not in the truck as it is too easy to damage the seal this way. When the dealership installed my rebuilt steering pump on the truck, it leaked oil instead of power steering fluid. I purchased the seal kit from CPFF and have solved the vacum leak issue but still have a groaning steering pump.

Cliffman--you da man--guess with my truck being 24' feet in the air didn't help--anyway my hat's off to ya by doing this yourself---

doodad--I'd be changing that powersteering pump, cuz it sounds like it may be ready to go and when it go it may take the vacuum pump with it and now you've got a double whammy hit on the pocket book---chris

Couldn’t have done it with out a lot of "do's and Don'ts from my truck buddies :). I'm going to post a "step by step" on doing this project so others will have a head up.

I will have to bookmark this thread.

I just got my truck back after 6 weeks and a $2400 hole in my wallet... .

Vac pump, PS pump, gear box

Since I provided the Vac pump (saving $1040 in additional costs), I am sure that DC will not help out if this leak develops.

When the mechanic took the old assy off my spare engine, he first removed the ps pump and then the vac pump. He was quite nervous about the oil line under the vac pump but it came off quickly.

Since he took it off in two steps I have to assume it went back together the same way. Hopefully he did not pinch the seal...

I noticed early on in this thread that a ford vacuum pump works in our trucks. If true, how would I drive the ps pump without our vacuum pump in place?

Is there a PS pump version that mounts directly to the engine without the vacuum pump?

I want to replace the missing vac pump on the spare engine but don't know how to deal with it's bad output gear?

Thx

That seal started to leak a couple years ago on my '96'. My dealer said it was covered by the 100,000 mile warranty on the Cummins. They installed a new pump under warranty.

Worth checking out if you are still in the 100,000 mile engine warranty.

Gene

I am reviving this thread as my vacuum pump is puking! Dealer wants $2300 to replace. It has only 62,000 miles- see further specs below.

Can someone definitivly tell me if this is covered under the 5/100 warrany? i have searched the threads and will do it my self if it is not covered- but it would be sure nice for someone else to do it. Also- in the mean time, as long as I keep engine oil level maintained, will I hurt anything (other than my driveway?)

Both vacuum pumps quit making vacuum on my 91 cummins dodge w250. Dealer cost approx$1000 each to replace. Had mine rebuilt for about 200 each. Had to send my units in as they had no spares. Still in all, only had truck down 5 days. Much better way to go... . Already put 50,000m on rebuilds--no problem
