I am in the midst of doing a five year/ 50,000 mile service on my '07, 5. 9, G56, 4X4. I decided after reading here that I was going to adjust my valves. I set them at . 010 intakes and . 025 on the exhausts. I took my time and got accurate feel on the drag with the feeler gauge. That #6 cylinder access leaves a lot to be desired!

The valves were loose but not too out of specs.

I also took apart the plastic air silencer tube and removed the baffles and super glued back together the end. It is the sleeve located between the rubber turbo intake and air box boots.

I started the engine and it sounded about the same but just a tad quieter. It idles smother. I don't know if it was the valve adjust or removing the baffles in the intake tube but it spools up much faster now and less smoke.

I intend on doing a rear diff service, (with the free spin hubs on the front, it rarely turns), coolant flush, brake fluid flush and maybe a trans oil change. (I put Synchromesh oil in it when I did my clutch)

I adjusted the valve lash on my 04 Cummins at 166,000 miles. I have been using Amsoil AME 15w-40 oil and only one oil filter (Amsoil EaO80 or Donaldson ELF7349) for each 25,000 mile oil change interval. I am now on my 5th oil change using this interval.

Chief,

Are you doing a UOA ? Why are you using 15/40 ?

If not mistaken, Amsoil recs. HDD5/30 not the Marine oil which I am told by my Ams. dist. as it is for the newer engines. . 6. 7's, Fords... (I have used it in summer but not as a rule) Are you in a warmer climate zone ?

For the 5. 9 I would not run the Amsoil HDD 5w-30 even though it is Amsoil's best diesel oil and has the most robust additive package. 5w-30 is too thin for the 5. 9L unless you live in long periods of sub zero temps. Amsoil AME 15w-40 is their second best diesel oil for the 07 and older 5. 9's and has a cold pour point of -44°F. Amsoil's CJ-4 oils are still top notch oils, but aren't as robust IMO for the 07 and older 5. 9's. When I was stationed in MD we had a brutal one week period during the winter a few years ago of single digit temps. Even the couple of nights that I didn't plug the truck in it started like it was 70°F outside with the Amsoil AME 15w-40.

I currently have 21,000 miles on on the oil in my engine. I am on my 5th 1yr/25,000 mile OCI using Amsoil AME 15w-40. I only use one oil filter the whole duration also which is either the Donaldson ELF7349 or Amsoil Eao80 and I do not have a oil bypass system. I only UOA when I change the oil and everytime it comes back that the oil is good for continued use. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I've been using the 5/30 in my signature truck for years, with good sample results. This truck is used primarily for long-distance transportation, so it is not run hard. I haven't been able to measure any consumption between changes, which are 18K miles with a filter change half way.

Perhaps if the truck was run hard there would be some benefit to the AME oil.

I think it's personal preference when it comes to oil.

I'm using the AME now simply because my local service provider switched to the CJ-4. I used it once and lost almost two quarts between a 5k interval.

Almost 7k and haven't lost any oil. AME is for me.
