From a Snap-On ad in Motor Age magazine: "Poor performance can be caused by valves being out of adjustment. Proper valve clearance is critical with Cummins diesels. Factory recommends valve lash should be set at 0. 010" on intake & 0. 020" on exhaust... Note: Techs in field have found by decreasing exhaust valve lash by 0. 003" for a total of 0. 017". Small performance gain can be achieved.

Is this righteous? Dr. Joe, do you agree?

I did that on my '97, I tightened them up . 002" Isn't +-. 005" still in spec? I thought i saw that somewhere. The idea was to increase valve duration slightly, the exhaust valve opens sooner and shuts later. I too would like a answer on this question as I was thinking about doing it on the 24V.

I don't really know if it did or not, that's why i'm very curious to know if it could make a difference. All I know is at similar power levels my 12V never had EGT problems unlike the 24V. I don't know if the valve adjustment had anything to do with that or not.
