You got me thinking, so I did mine tonight (82K on the clock). They all needed adjusting down as they were opened up. The . 010 gauge had no resistance at all on any of the intakes. All needed a good snugging. Same with the exhaust. Glad I didn't wait. Number 6 cylinder is a bear.

My tip is if you have one of those cooling fan wrenches and turn the engine clockwise (from the front), she turns pretty easy. Mine wouldn't turn CCW (looking from the front) so when I went past my mark, I had to put a socket on one of the damper bolts to back it up. Otherwise, it was much easier than my 01 to get the valve cover off.

I did mine today too. I checked mine a few months ago but I wasn't careful enough. I checked each really carefully this time and set the intakes to . 010 and exhaust to . 020. This did reduce engine noise quite a bit but I still have noticeable injector noise.

Here's what I measured mine at:

Intake Exhaust

1) . 021 . 023

2) . 017 . 025

3) . 016 . 025

4) . 016 . 025

5) . 018 . 023

6) . 018 . 023

If there's a wrench day, I got 2 things now to do, the valves, and the fuel tank vent thing. I can't get my big 'ol hands up to get the lines, and I'm afraid to break something. I'm real weary of working on this thing.

I just took mine to buy fuel. The most noticeable difference is that prior to the adjustment, when the truck would down shift, it would make a tinny, rattling noise. That is noise is gone. Also, it had a slight vibration at idle and that, too is gone. Getting all the valves on the same page seems to have helped.

Follow up to the adjustment:

I fueled up last night. 585 miles with 27 gallons of fuel. That's a solid 22 mpg. Up to now, I've been averaging 20-21. I do the same trip every week.

400 miles was running 65-70 mph.

185 was city miles.

That's a solid 1 mpg gain over what I was getting before the valve lash adjustment.

I Adj My Valves All The Time, I Always Run The Intakes Tight And The Ex At Spec, They Are Always In Factory Spec, But Always Out Of What I Want But That Is Because I Drive It Hard...
