Thanks for the reply all I get from the book is between 0.006 and 0.015 and 0.015 and 0.030 . So I will go With 10 and 20 . Thanks again

I'd stick to the spec. And I usually run through them twice. I always do on new engine builds and usually do on service adjustments unless the engine is a complete PITA to run through once. I like running twice to A) double-check my work and B) look for big differences from the first pass to the second that could indicate valvetrain issues. If they're not clear out of whack before adjustment and the clearance stays dead on the second time around, I know everything is hunky-dory as far as valve seating, rocker arm wear, etc. For Dodge pickups, I've got the rotation tool and a 4-foot extension I can usually snake down to it with a universal joint so I can turn the engine over from the top side. The funny thing is that I'm a John Deere technician, and the same rotation tool works in a lot of Deere engines too.

I will definitely use the ten twenty spec that's good to know about the tool working on john deeres to I got the tool from genos and it sure makes it a lot easier to bar the engine over a lot better than trying to use the alternator .

Put a quart of Wally World 2 cycle oil in the fuel tank next fill up and see if it is quieter. Do they both have the under hood pad? Is the rubber gasket at top of the firewall out of place? What about the foam pads by the door hinges? Chris

Will give er a try both under hood pads seem to be in good shape and door seals OK no wind noise the engine in question is in the red truck I got that has had the engine replaced mileage unknown

So the valve lash is dead on . Engine seems to rattle a little more than my other 24 valve does ideas ?
Thanks Shaun

No two engines are exactly alike. Especially if you know one has been replaced. They're both 5-speed trucks so they should both be 235hp, but what if the replacement engine was just a long-block and it's a 245hp with higher compression? What if it's got brand-new nozzles in it? Or doesn't? if you have two of them, maybe this one is fine and the OTHER one has a problem. You didn't think of THAT, did you? Don't take offense. I'm just kidding. But that's the kind of situation you can put yourself in when you expect two DIFFERENT trucks or engines or tractors or any other machine to be the SAME, just because they're SIMILAR. I've been there and done that with tractors, combines, heavy equipment, etc. Salesman LOVE to sell one customer two or three or ten of the same machine. I'd rather they sell three different guys one of something any day. Because when it's one guy with three of something new and under warranty, there is no such thing as I have A problem. It's I have THREE problems. And when you tell them that the other two aren't broken, the answer is ALWAYS "yet".

That's is something I hadn't really thought of And the replaced engine could be a 245 hp for all I know I tried getting numbers off the plate but I couldn't see them well enough to read any of them . it is just going off the fuel filter a newer engine I'm going to try to get the numbers off the identification plate agin then I'll know what I've got . I can only imagine dealing with warranty headaches when one guy owns 3 or 4 of the same machine just like me a guy wants them all to sound and be exactly the same especially when they are brand new .

So inside driving a Reg Cab and a Quad Cab will sound quite different. I noticed that back in 2001 when I was buy my truck. The Quad Cab rear sounds like a echo camber or something similar. At any rate I thought I heard "things" behind me that I did not hear in the Reg Cab that I bought. Chris

Do you have any power "chip" of any kind? They can advance the timing some so when the engine is cold you will hear a rattle. How about all your injector line clamps, are any missing or loose.

Nick

If you are unsure of mileage might be time to pull the injectors and have the pop reset. They will rattle more when that gets off. Depending on the state of the VP44 it will cause more\less rattle also.

If you don't have a lot of mods and fuel you can pull the vlavle lash down to .008 intake and .018 exhaust to quiet things down a bit and give a little better htrottle response\turbo spool.

Thanks for the replies Im goina run some 2 cycle oil through and I got some schaffers fuel treatment and see if it quiets down any then I might set the valves a little tighter .

Snorking;
I fixed the noise in my 2001 quad cab by removing the rear seat, rolling the carpet forward and laying sound deadening material, starting just below the
back window. I installed the sound deadening down and forward and it is a different truck now. my wife says that it is our travel vechicle now.
