I have the 1991 81-370-1108A Service Manual Supplement.
1992 Dodge Cummins intercooled 5.9 6BT
I am starting with a unlocked VE Pump and disassembled timing gear. I did not take the engine apart but I putting it back together.

Some YouTube videos state to line up the pump at D, others C, and the service manual E. What is the pros and cons of each point?

I know I need a dial indicator to set the timing. (especially at this state.) Where is the best place (value) and part number to get one that will work on this pump.

The manual states if you remove the timing housing TDC will not be correct. is that true? Does TDC and the pin location (the one that locks in the cam gear) have to be set with a dial indicator? I don't remember there being slots in the timing gear housing. I am assuming they are taking the VE pump TDC.

The timing letters are based on application. Wrong letters could mean your engine wont run at all, or would maybe run better depending on use case (like sled pulling for example).

Yes a dial indicator is needed. I dont have the PN though. They are specific to these pumps.

Correct. If you change the location of the pin housing or the entire gear case, TDC will be moved in relation to the pump.

The dial indicator in my kit says Schley Products Mitutoyo NO 1044-01...one eBay search said $151, but maybe a friendly Cummins or Bosch shop will "rent" one.
