I got my Bosch reseal kit the other day and am going to fix that slow leak I have before it gets any worse. I also ordered a 366 gov spring. I decided not to put that in just yet since I haven't gotten any gauges to baseline my truck with yet. I'll do that later.

My question: Since I'm R+R ing my old pump, is there really any need to put the engine at TDC? I was planning on rotating it to get the pump key on the topside of the shaft before pulling the pump so as not to lose it in the motor. The only marks I was going to pay attention to were the pump marks. Someone has already set this pump about a 1/16th above stock and I was going to do the same.

Am I wrong about this?

No longer a VE Virgin

SUCCESS!!! I finally got the pump resealed and reinstalled this past weekend. I had only two leaks at fittings which were remedied by tightening. It LIVES!! Oo.

I did not put the engine at #1 TDC for the pump pull. This is OK as I was just doing a reseal on the old pump. The drawback of this I found was that the pump 'likes' to park at six different positions. It is hard to keep it anywhere in between. When I pulled it, it spun just a wee bit to one of its favorite relaxed positions. Consequently I had to roll the engine forward just a touch to get the key back into the timing gear. This is one drawback of not going with TDC #1. If you're pulling and reinstalling your pump and don't plan on pulling the mainshaft, you could use the lock screw to hold timing and not care where the engine has stopped.

My pump looked great inside with nice shiny smooth surfaces. I was happy about that. I did not take the throttle lever and shaft out to reseal. I was concerned with losing that index on the levers. I'll pull and seal later if that leaks. I did not touch any screw settings, but had to turn up my low idle 2. 5 turns to get it back where it had been. I was surprised at this. I never realized this engine would idle so low... .

Thanks for all the help!!!!

Happy to be rattling though town finally. Next stop: TURNING SCREWS!! :-laf
