Question About 6.7 Exhaust Brake

For all those reading this: That dana 70 was rebuilt by 2 different shops 6 months apart at a total cost of $4000. Then I bought the truck, I was shown the reciept that the dana 70 is rebuilt. 2 1/2 years later since the rebuild, the pinion nut came loose. when I tried tightening back up, I found that I could not get the nut torqued to 220 ft/lbs as the pinion couldn't move anymore. It was jammed tight which tells me there are no shims inside for proper preload. #@$%!

The DANA 70 and 80 both use shims to preload the pinion bearings. If the pinion nut backs off it doesn't take long to trash the shims. Then theres no way to set the preload without a rebuild.

Well, after reading all the responses here we called the dealer this morning. Seems they did NOT replace the crush sleeve.

So, it will go in tomorrow morning and they will pull the center out to see if there is bearing damage or not.

I will give you an update in a day or so (depending on what they have to fix) when we go for a highway drive... .

Thanks for all of the help guys! Never would have guessed crush sleeve but it makes perfect sense. Nothing else really left!

Oh, Mhannink - It was axle seal. Was running down tire.

They shouldn't have had to replace the crush sleeve for seal replacement unless the tech over-tightened the pinion nut. In either case, that has nothing to do with your vibration. See if you can get the dealership to "borrow" a DS from a new truck and try it in yours.

If DS stands for DRIVESHAFT, Return to first post. driveshaft and u-joints replaced with new. Driveshaft reclocked 180 drgrees. There is a hole host of things that have been done except the bearing preload.

Exactly.

Been there done that. Tried one borrowed. Tried new u joints... . tried entire new shaft from Mopar parts.

All that is left is something in the diff. That was the only other thing touched.

They got the parts in Monday (they ordered all new bearings in the event the parts were toast), dropped the truck off Tuesday, they pulled apart on wednesday, will pick up tomorrow and will see!

Fingers crossed.

I'm not allowed to cross my fingers as everyone says I'm bad luck. :-laf Hopefully the issue is fixed, your dad gets his favourite truck back finally. Your dad must be pretty #@$%! at it.

The good news is the rear end didn't cost him $4000 like my dana 70 costed my buddy. I only paid $700 for the big Dana 80 with discs:D

Dad got truck back.

Total axle rebuild even though bearings and all looked OK. They thought if they were in there may as well do it... .

Drove home. F*&^#$! vibration is still there. He is NOT a happy camper to say the least.

Signed, son of the pirate mouth ;)

bschwarzli:#@$%! So now what? transfer case, transmission rebuild? Maybe I should come to your place and look over with you.

Maybe it's the decals... ;)

Yeah. I have no clue anymore. I don't know what's next. Possible weight on tq converter. Could be t case. I don't know. And at what point do you stop putting money into it?

The Mega and the Quad cab have the same chasis under them. My 08 with an auto in a quad cab had a vibration that they could never find until total failure. Here is the story if you would like to read.

I my opinion, it is a misalignment between the engine and the transmission. Just enough to cause a wiggle in the torque converter making the flex-plate flex at the crankshaft until it was fatigued enough to crack around the crank.

Many years ago I had a very similar experience when I was starting out in a truck shop, I replaced a flywheel housing without dialing it in, making sure it was centered to the crank ( didn't know it was suppose to be done ). Well 900 miles down the road, he needed a new clutch again, took the centers out of the discs.

The flexplate is the weakest component in the Dodge Trucks. It's the same flexplate from all the way back to the start of the Cummins powered Dodges. Even they give a lot of trouble with turned up pumps on those 160 hp engines. Now they still use them but not sure if they stopped making them or use them even in the newer trucks.

Put another driveshaft in it from a new truck that does not vibrate. That will confirm or eliminate the DS as a problem. A converter problem or flexplate problem should be able to be reproduced without even moving the truck.

To bad dodge wont come up with a award for the fix, like $1000. Would save them lots of $$$. Anyway my guess is a motor/trans mount. Let me know if I win!!!
