My biggest advice for you is something that I say at the beginning of every class I teach........"Don't be afraid of fear". Fear is probably your best safety tool. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it and don't let anyone talk you in to it. If you have a member of your department that tells you that nothing scares them, stay as far away from that person as possible. Either they are completely naive or a fool. In both cases, they have the potential to hurt you or themselves. The day you stop being afraid is the day you need to hang it up.
Take all of your classes seriously, even the ones that seem mundane. You will never know when those skills will come in handy.
