Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Changing the Power Steering Pump

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P0230 right now and I'm towing

Pretty sure it’s all in the ECM and MAYBE injectors. There was an HO and SO IP, if I remember correctly. I can look it up tomorrow at work.

I’d appreciate it if you could ? So one can replace another then ? Got a used one I’m trying to sell

I believe the VP-44 is a different model between the HO and SO engines. I recall one could put the HO pump on the SO to gain a little power.

I would ask a pump rebuilder like Blue Chip. I know when I spoke with them prior to replacing my Very Pathetic (lifespan) 44, I was told there were certain pump versions they wouldn’t even rebuild. I think it was the housing they didn’t reuse.

From Midwest Fuel Injection site:

Common Applications
  • VP44-027X – 1998.5-2002 Dodge Cummins 5.9L Automatic 24V ISB Engine 235HP
    #ad
  • VP44-028X – 2000-2002 Dodge Cummins HO 5.9L, 6 Speed Manual Transmission
    #ad
  • VP44-029X – Non-Dodge applications including Ford, Freightliner, Kenworth, and Peterbilt
    #ad

So what is wrong with gaining 20HP with a replacement pump. Do people want to stay at 215 for some unknown reason???

;):p:rolleyes:o_O

The pump is sold just trying to figure out if the pump will work or not I guess thanks for nothing we’ll bolt it up and see if it works

After reading all the above, I still wonder what the difference might be between the VP44 in my '02 HO as compared to the SO - and the ECM as well. I replaced my VP44 back at 22K miles - don't remember if any reference was made as to HO/SO engines. I also have a spare ECM - and dunno if there was a difference in them either...

RE- 215hp vs. 235hp differences. If you have had your Truck (98.5-2001 model years) into a Dodge Dealer and they have done any Software updates on the ECM then they upped your HP setting to 235hp. Dodge has been doing this since mid 2000's the updates no longer have the 215hp settings.

It is possible that your truck has never had any software/firmware updates and you could still be at 215hp.

I remember that fact now that you pointed it out.

My '02 is already the High Output version - not seen a dealer in 20 years, so no ECM updates from that source, if there were any available. My spare ECM was programmed for my truck's profile ('02 standard shift) some years back by one of the members here (Bob Hansen) on TDR - so assume it is the same programming as the OEM one still on my truck - so still unsure of any factory differences between the '02 HO vs SO truck ECM's - OR, the injection pumps internal circuitry or internal mechanicals... Not a critical issue by any means - just curiosity...

well not exactly because the 98 and 99 24 valve had a 215 horsepower pump on the automatic

2000 also , the HP rating didn't go up on the auto till 01. I think the difference between the HP ratings of auto and manual prior to 01 was injectors ? We talked about this way back then , a search might bring it up ?
