Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Changing the Power Steering Pump

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P0230 right now and I'm towing

RE- 215hp vs. 235hp differences. If you have had your Truck (98.5-2001 model years) into a Dodge Dealer and they have done any Software updates on the ECM then they upped your HP setting to 235hp. Dodge has been doing this since mid 2000's the updates no longer have the 215hp settings.

It is possible that your truck has never had any software/firmware updates and you could still be at 215hp.

That's interesting , though the last time I had my 2000 into the dealer for any work was about 2004 at 99,900 miles for a fuel gauge issue they refused to fix because I relocated my lift back by the tank. They must have been doing that after that ... not that I would let them do a reflash even if they wanted to ... I pad locked over the OBDII connector the very few times it went in.

2000 also , the HP rating didn't go up on the auto till 01. I think the difference between the HP ratings of auto and manual prior to 01 was injectors ? We talked about this way back then , a search might bring it up ?

As I recall the 2001 SO with the first to get the HY35 turbo also.

There were injector differences auto vs. 5 speed, vs. HO. I dyno'ed the 275 HP RV injectors in all three. The auto gains 50 HP, the 5 speed 33 HP and the HO gains 42 HP going from stock to the RV injectors. As noted above, there were two VP44s in Dodges, regular and HO. The HO had a steeper cam for more pressure rise, but smaller barrels.

My 2001.5 dyno's low for the mods it had. Bill from DTT said it should have been higher. Later I learned about the throttle cable issue. If you lifted the throttle pedal and it went up more than a 1/4" or so, you were not getting full throttle. Solution was a split fishing sinker or tie wrap on the cable at the top of the pedal. Bill said I should have put down more like 325/650.

I believe the VP-44 is a different model between the HO and SO engines. I recall one could put the HO pump on the SO to gain a little power.
Advertised compression ratio is 16.3:1 for the standard issue Dodge/Cummins, and 17.2:1 for the HO version.
Is this CR bump done using a thinner head gasket ?

When I took in my 99' back in 1999 and complained to the dealer about low power they did a TSB re-flash of the engine ECM. The TSB# was 18-11-99 they put a decal under the hood. The engine sounded different at idle like it was louder and raspier "I think it was because it advanced the injection timing" and had much improved power towing. Well about 8 months later I get a postcard in the mail that they want me to bring my truck in because the re-flash did not meet EPA standards for NOX. The dealer never got to plug into my ECM again, and a few months later I installed the Bosch 275HP Fire Truck/ Marine injectors. That also added another nice increase in towing power, I'm still driving it like that today.
