Another question. Are you positive it needs a ground as it may just be a switch that activates. Normally switches do not have grounds.

Well that's not good as far as my suggestion goes when I used that previously it worked fine but obviously your setup is different. Without a pic hard exactly to see the issue. However if you used the ring connector could you stack a couple of washers under it to take up the space of the unused threads. Or next option would be just run a hose from your fitting to another location a few inches or a few feet away and then you could do whatever you needed by using a different style fitting. If this fitting is right at the VP44 I can tell you that the VP44 pulses like crazy and has been known to beat senders to death. Many people used to use a hose like this or similar anyway

to get the sender further away from the pump and zip tie it some place off the engine to eliminate that vibration as well. I know I used to use a snubber and a needle valve together to help keep the potential pulsing damage down.
