My dads 2001 ETH dies while idling. It started missing then just slowed until it died. Suspect injection pump died. His dealer says VP-44 not covered under Cummins 100K engine warranty, only internal parts. :--)

He called me so I called my dealer and he says both lift and VP-44 pumps are covered. DUH!!! I call him back and give him the info, so he calls his dealer and they pull a GM trick. Get ready for this!!! We need the VIN because only some are covered under the 100K warranty.

How bad do you have to be to not have 5 stars. Apparently pretty bad if the 5 stars suck this bad.

I would stay the hell away from that dealer and tell all your friends and co-workers not to even consider them for a new vehicle purchase. Just think, if they don't even know what is covered and what isn't covered under warranty, then it is most likely that they don't even have a competent diesel technician on their staff. I used to be a Ford technician a while back and it is astonishing that in most dealership service departments, only about 5 to 10 percent of the technicians they employ can understand and repair any of that manufacturers models from bumper to bumper. I have been with 5 dealers through the years and most of them are the same way. Usually the cream of the crop technicians end up finding another line of work or they go to an independent shop because the manufacturer screws them on a lot of warranty rate work.

I think he is getting that impression as we speak. We bought our 2000 Intrepid at that dealer and I can guarantee you I will never buy another vehicle there as long as I live. I would have at least looked into it first before just saying NO!! Nothing like trying to screw a loyal customer out of $2000+.

I figured this post would get all sorts of people fired up but I guess it is well known around here most dealer are incompetent. :D

jman

Thats the exact same crap I got from the dealer. My injection pump craped on me in 1998. I gave them my vin number finally after the 3rd call. Then he says its covered under warrenty. Well daaa. So I would stay away from Hopkins Dodge in MN.

I've heard of these types of stories before. It's what happens when you can't tell your a$$ from a hole in the ground. But then what do you expect from a 5 Turds dealer?

I have often wondered exactly what the so called "five star dealers" do to get that designation. I have found in my travels throughout the US that dealers that have that following their name give the lousiest service. It must be based on the number of warranties the dealership can get voided.

I have found the best service from the non "five star" dealerships in my travels. My local dealer was rated "five star" and I have quit going to them for general service not covered by warranty. Some independant shops seem to have mechanics with a lot more knowledge of diesels than any dealership I have ever been in.

A lot of the dealerships don't even have a diesel mechanic, but farm out the work to independant shops. Ford does the same thing.

My son who owns a Ford took his truck to the local Ford dealer for service. He discovered he had left some important papers in the truck and went back to get them. He discovered his truck was at an independant shop in Seattle.

I think if I was a young man wanting to become a mechanic, I would specialize in diesels.

What they do is when they screw something up they don't call you for the quality check. In the past my dealer called me on all of the work they did. They repalced a seal under warranty and did not clean the brake drums. I called and climbed up their butt. Never got a qualtiy call on that job.

Actually, believe it or not I believe the five star thing really IS about how much warranty work they can deny. Seems like that came up on here awhile back and one of the criteria is something like having the least amount of warranty claims.

dan

another reason to LOOOOOVE my 12valver... no warranty thus my truck will never see the inside of a dealership garage again Oo.

actually, the lift pumps and the vp are not covered under the 100K warranty, it's in the fine print, but most good dealers will still take care of you, you have a valid *****, I would try another dealer, good luck

It's covered in my warranty, they call it an injection pump ;)

VP-44

I don't think there is a dealer out there who doesn't know the injection pump is covered under trhe engine warranty. They intended to charge you AND Daimler Chrysler for the job. They probably justify it as astute business, not fraud, as everyone else does!
