Ok guys I have now joined the need a new VP44 crowd :{ . After two months of hard starts my truck is almost impossible to start.

I have been reserching the internet and can't really find any good answers to my questions. Maybe some of you guys have already dealt with my questions yourselves and have the answers or maybe some of the pump shops will speak up too! :D

My questions is, is there any advantage of new over rebuilt or visa versa? I have found that the prices are pretty close between the two and just wondering if I should spend the extra for a brand new pump or if the rebuilt ones are just as good as the new ones? Does anyone know what the details are of the rebuilt pumps? In other words, how rebuilt are they? A few new parts and some used or all new parts inside of the pump housing? Is the PCM(I think that's right  ) new too or just a checked out old one?

I have also been reading about the "Upgraded pumps". How do you know if you getting the upgraded pumps and what exactly is and upgraded pump. What have they done to make it a better pump?

Thanks!

aarlucas,

I had to replace my VP44 this past Febuary, I got mine from PDR. I got the "rebuilt" unit which turned out to be a brand new pump in a rebuilt box. Which ever one you get, new or rebuilt, you should be getting the updated pump with all of the fixes for the past 5 or so years since your's was built. Yes there is an upgraded pump avaliable and it was running about $1000 more then a stock pump. It is directed towards the high horsepower crowd that have a requirement for lots of extra fuel. The the guys at PDR a call and they can give you all of the details.

Also have you check your lift pump? Do you still have good pressure from it? If not you'll want to change it at this time also.

Thanks for the input. I have a new lift pump (less than 6 month old). I think that is why I need a new vp44 now. I have gauges and towing up hill, full throttle, I have 11-12 psi from the lift pump. When my LP went out I didn't have gauges and I drove the truck for who knows how long with the lift pump working erratically.

IF I could be assured I was getting a new *late production* VP-44, I'd probably prefer that route - but a recent rebuild from PDR or any reputable rebuilder SHOULD have all the latest pump upgrades - and being a slower-paced operation, potentially better care, assembly and calibration might be the result...

Just to be on the safe side, I'd sure like to pick up a spare pump for my HO at a reasonable price that fits the above scenario - wonder what they are running $$$ wise nowadays?

My rebuilt(new) pump was around $1300 + $400 core charge. When my pump went it was not a machanical failure in the pump but an electrical failure of some type. I was pulling on to the freeway from a rest stop and the engine backfired and quite and that is all she wrote. Fortunatlly I was only 90 miles from home at the end of a 7500 mile trip that took me as far north as the Artic ocean.
