Need some objective opinions... .

Had my VP44 replaced (warranty) for a no start condition. Was told by the service advisor that the part would be new, great I thought!

Got the truck back, looking it over, big sticker on top of injection pump "RE-MAN. "

I go back to dealer raise holy hell and demand that this pump be replcaed with new! Thats what was offered and that is what I accepted and expected.

Dealer said all they could do was open up an item to discuss with Chrysler zone manager. I said fine and by the way, could you order me a fan shroud that your mechanic broke in three pieces by sitting on it? (sorry venting).

Go back yesterday to pickup the fan shroud and to talk with the service manager. Service manager says zone rep states that part is supplied by cummins under warranty and they are only suppling Reman pumps. Another statement was that they are seeing alot less problems with the reman pumps than the new - BLAH, BLAH, BLAH I thought...

So thats where I am thinking about it. I had always thought new was better than re-man but in this case it might not be true.

Our VP44 has been out what 4-5 years? In that time I am sure Bosch has had some lessons learned and would incorporate them into a reman pump right?

Even if I fight and win a new pump, who's to say it wasn't manufactured in 1999 and does not have the incorporated changes that my re-man pump has?

Any opinions welcome!

Cummins Re-man stuff is GOOD !!!

I would not be upset if it came Cummins and Bosch approved. The re-man stuff usually has the updated parts. I remember reading a while back that there were no more "new" VP44 pumps and all future pumps will be re-man units. I would find out if it is a "Bosch" re-man pump and if it is not ,demand that DC uses one. Good luck,Thomas

LB,

I'm not sure if DC is currently using reman'd pumps but early this year they were putting brand new VP 44's in reman'd boxes. What color is your pump? Larry

LB,

Reman should be fine, in fact, it is often better than new. It has been run in and QC'ed twice. Should have all the bugs out of it plus the latest parts.

Is it possible to take a VP out of a truck that is running, but has suspected problems with the VP and send it to Bosch for a rebuild? Is that any cheaper than buying a reman?

I just had my pump replaced under warranty and it is a reman pump. It is all black in color and says that it is reman. I look at it this way, they fixed it and it didn't cost me anything but the tow to the dealer. The truck had 95,xxx miles on it when the pump went.

I also had a problem with the vp44. Long story short--the after market pusher pump I install by the tank was pumping out 25+ psi. Too much for the vp44. I talked to the local Bosch dealer about a reman pump & he said don't buy a reman when a new one is about the same cost. (aprox $1100. 00) Also--the reman's are just that--a re-built pump the is not up-graded--only repaired. The new pumps have the lastest upgrade (4 upgrades ??)--this is straight from the Bosch dealed mouth. Good luck with the Dodge Rep.

I thought a remanufactured unit was not just fixed and sent back out there. I thought every part had to be basically perfect. Bosch would be a fool to just fix what is broke and sent it out there again calling it remanufactured. And it is true... reman is about $100-200 cheaper than brand new. Thats not much savings.
