Question, and I reckon this could be subjective on the part of any responses, but that's ok.

Does anybody know if there is any difference between the pumps that various advertisers sell at this site (at a considerably lower price) than the pumps Cummins or Dodge sell?

When I talked to Cummins earlier today about the problem I had with my truck, they told me that their pumps run $2700.

I've heard that Dodge charges $3800, but I don't know if that includes labor.

Is there any difference between the pumps?

can you upgrade a VP44?

Can you upgrade a VP44 in a DOdge Diesel. Mine is a 99' model and here stories about them going bad. Is there another cummins type Vp that will replace the VP44 or aftermarket ones?

a few places make higher output VPs if that is what you mean. The stock original VPs had flaws that caused early demise but revisions and internal parts have been improved and they are very much more reliable now. A bad LP is the MOST COMMON cause of death in a VP truck.

Thanks for all of the answers.

My problem at the moment, is that I don't know what the problem actually is. When my stock VP44 gave up the ghost at 138K, it was easy to diagnose. I got a check engine light, power just went away, I had to limp home and as long as I kept the rpm's to 1500 or under, I could drive reasonably fast enough not to be a rolling roadblock.

There was no smoke with that one and I was able to get the code's read at an Advance Auto, verifying that the pump indeed went bad.

There are not check engine lights this time and truck, while starting hard, will fire. Idle is rough and smoke is heavy.

Fuel pressure has been consistent. The lift pump is working. I know this because I pumped a couple of quarts through the filter into mason jars, to check for fuel contamination. Flow was good. Granted that is not under load, but I monitor fuel pressure and flow has been consistent over the years.

Like I said, my problem is that I don't know exactly what my problem is.

It could be the injection pump. It could be injectors. It could be in the valve train.

Not really. I'm aware of the higher output VP's.

What I want to know, with the basic "normal" VP44 that can be purchased from advertisers at this site or from Cummins or from Dodge, is there any difference in specs or quality?

When my stock VP44 crapped the bed, I purchased a reman from a vendor at this site and did the install myself.

If I knew for certain that it was the VP44, I'd buy a higher performance pump and do the install. Like I've said elsewhere, I just don't know what my problem is. That sucks, because I'm going to have to pay the freight for somebody else's labor.

Oh well.
