Thanks, TDR Staff

Holy crap I feel sorry for these guys!!!!!

I Love to see a rabbit smoke!!!!!!!

Someone was telling me about a V-6 VW tdi engine that puts out 150 hp. Does anyone know anything about this motor. Looking for tranplant. thanks

Europe only... drove one of the 130HP 4 banger TDI's in a Golf... just about as much fun as you can have in pants. The torque out of that little thing was great. Only TDI North America gets is the 90HP with 150+ lbs of torque. Good little engine, drives a Jetta quite well. Supposedly, we will be getting a 100HP TDI in the North American market in 2003. Reason for not importing the fun stuff... crappy diesel and an EPA with skull shoved past anus.

A popular VW bomb is to take a 1. 9l Canadian TD (non TDI), add an Audi 5000 intercooler, turn up the pump, add fresh air intake, Walla! 130hp! Put it in an early 80s Rabbit PU (2000lbs) with GTI brakes and swaybars. This gives you about the same HP/weight ratio as a 450hp Ram, but it handles like a race car and will still get 45mpg.

I think that's cool. :D

I can't imagine the Jetta with 150 hp, the way ours runs with only 90. By the way, if anyone would like to add a diesel car to the stables, we're going to sell ours. We're buying a fleet return minivan from my company. If anyone's interested in a great running, great fuel economy car in near perfect shape, email me.

Hi Gang,

There's a little confusion here!

The Jetta and Rabbit(Golf) engines are 4 Cyl. 1. 9L engines.

Those can be ordered here in 115-130-150Hp configurations.

Altough, the 150Hp version is nearly impossible to have. Waiting list @ VW for that engine is near to ONE YEAR.

(BTW. The only difference I know off is the software in the ECM, and that's rather simple to change) :)

The V-6 engine tk064 referes to, is a 2. 5L . It's used in the Passat.

That engine is downrated to 150Hp by VW cuz they don't have a transmission able to withstand higher torque/Hp numbers yet. :{

I've raced a buddy that has a Passat with that engine. Guess who won? Oo.

I have to admit anyway that this car is rather impressive! Wasn't as simple as I had guessed to beat him! I believe it was mainly due to the fact that he had a stick while my AT did not loose time to shift... ... . :p

Marco,

Thanks for the update. The V-6 for the passat is what I was asking about. I need to be more specific.

Thanks again for the information

Marco, isnt there a 5 cylinder turbo diesel motor as well? What engine was it that VW used to win the Nurburgring race last year? That car was stupid-fast!!

Isn't the new VW Bettle available with a new

180 HP TDI for 2003? I'm not too crazy about

the Beetle but the new VW Passat wagon is

pretty cool with a TDI!

I-5 Diesel

BCFAST, yes there is a I-5 engine. It's a Mercedes.

I-5, 2. 7L, 170 Hp @ 4200 rpm, 370Nm @ 1600 Rpm.

Very good and fast engine. IMHO.

( That's the engine now used in the Cherokee)

Chris, I haven't heard anything about an 180 Hp engine from VW.

Who knows maybe...

VW

marco, the numbers you quoted are only available in Europe??? my OWMBO just got new wheels, and the Beetle with the diesel made it to the final round, but not the final cut. in the US, my understanding is that the ONLY diesel cars available NOW are the golf, jetta, and the beetle. all have the 1. 9 L TDI with 90 HP and 150 lb/ft of torque. (Lexus RX300 was the final choice).

redneckdr,

I think so. The numbers I've quoted are for the cars one can buy here.

What I really don't understand is WHY you don't have a larger choice of brands/diesel engines over there!

Hey, if you don't offer an diesel engine for a car here, no sales. .

I've been talking with a salesguy @ DC yesterday. For example, the Grand Cherokee is sold 98% with the diesel engine here.

Very rare to see an gasser Cherokee.

diesel

yeah, marco, i think you were in on the discussions a month or so ago, as we were shopping. i tried to figure out some way to get a legal passat diesel into the US. NO DICE!!!

Marco, Americans can thank GM and the

lame hybrid diesel they sold to the public

in the mid 70's. I'm sure you are aware

of the 5. 7 diesel, from what I understand

was an Oldsmobile 350 gas engine

converted to a diesel design. Sure, they

ran good and got great mileage when

they were new but did not last long.

I have been to Europe and seen the

various diesel vehicles there. I am at

awe of all the really nice turbo intercooled

diesel options you have!! Maybe some

day Americans will wise up. I hope it is

soon. The US Gov't is getting rediculous

with their proposed CAFE (Corporate

Average Fuel Economy) mandates.

Basically to get the outrageuosly high

MPG numbers, US manufacturers will

have to make lighter (less safe), more

fuel efficient (less power) cars AND

light trucks/pickups. If the engine

manufacturers would wise up and offer

diesels, then the development of these

diesel engines would after say 4-5 years

provide for some really nice, quiet,

clean burning diesels like VW is selling

over your way.

diesels

my OWMBO and i were amazed at the spunk of the little TDI, even in stock form--detuned and with EGR for the US. if we had just been able to get a little bit bigger car (read Passat) with a diesel, she'd be driving a diesel, instead of a new gasser. :(

Even here in Europe we heard about that GM engine.

Mind, that was before I even started to think to buy an American vehicle! The buzz arround that engine was soooo loud...

I've heard that the early engines would break frequently the crankshaft, dunno if that's the truth.

Now just to add another piece of information. We talk about Cummins here for obvious reasons, then I see you mention the VW diesel engines.

Keep in mind that the worlds largest diesel engine MFR is PSA.

What are you saying? Who is PSA?

PSA is joint venture of Peugeot-Fiat-Citroen.

PSA alone builds 2. 8 Milion diesel engines a year!!! ( Give or take a few ) (Mostly smaller engines for cars or vans)

Other diesel engine MFR's are Mercedes, VW, BMW, Iveco, MAN, Deutz, I've surely forgotten someone but those are the biggest ones.
