VW no longer making tdi

We were at a show in Las Vegas Yesterday and I was talking with the lucky fool's that got to sit at a show and talk about Vw . Well anyway I asked when the 17 TDI was coming out and they said Not going to happen. From what he say's VW is no longer able to sell them in the States .Not that I Believe that but wanted to ask Here to see if anyone Else had heard anything . They also said there were going to be some design changes but they have yet to get a picture of thing's .

There are no 16's either. The EPA put a stop sale on all new TDI's over a year ago when the big scandal broke out. Hard to believe VW can't come up with a fix for the SCR equipped cars, which is all they would have to do in order to be able to sell them again.

Obama wants electric cars so the EPA is out to kill the Diesel engine. Wait until you see the 2019 emissions rules I don't know if any deiesel will be available after that.

The irony of all these emissions regs is with gasoline engines going the way of direct injection they are also pumping out NOX, and it's not even a monitored pollutant.

We are looking into the VW buy back. They are offering us $700.00 more then what we paid for it back in June of 2015. Wife loves the car plus the 40 miles per gallon (highway) it gets! The three cars (suv's), we owned before the Passat where Chevy Suburbans, 14-19 M.P.G. Big difference with the Passat!!! Looking into Honda Accords, we shall see.

We are keep my wife's 2011 Jetta TDI. I see no reason to junk the car (sell back to dealer) and get some money for the car. Only to go out and buy another car and have lower fuel mileage with payments all over again. The car is paid for and runs great and get's good fuel mileage.

The question is what is the fix going to be and how much will it affect reliability, fuel mileage, and maintenance intervals. VW either has to come up with an approved fix by a certain date or they will have to buy back all affected models and send em to the crusher. It's a tough decision as my instincts would initially be the same as yours, but any approved fixes will most certainly ding the above areas I mentioned and likely negate any advantage of running a diesel. I think this is why most people are opting for the buyback rather than wait for a fix.

Another thing to look at, say you choose to keep your vehicle and end up in an accident or the vehicle gets stolen. The buy back program is contingent on the vehicle being in running driving condition to qualify for the buyback. So while your insurance company may cover the loss at face value you'll end up missing out on the cash cow VW is passing around to be milked.

I know they are offering myself more than what I paid for it to begin with and their goodwill program earlier on was worth $1k as well. While I love the car and the mileage I am unsure about the fix. I do not know what it is nor do I know the impact to performance, mileage or reliability. Yes they are saying they will extend the emissions warranty but that isn't going to help the mileage or the performance issue if there is one and there will be one or they would have set it up correctly to begin with and not looked for a cheat. In fact from what I have read in the court docs they don't actually have an approved fix yet for either the latest generation or the previous ones. While there is plenty of speculation about the fix(es) the truth is none have been accepted yet by Carb or the EPA at least that I have seen and I've been watching. So for the 2015's while the speculation has been they will just add a couple sensors and change some tuning there is nothing concrete out there even for that speculation. That would be huge at least to the 2015 owners to know about the fix "we have been testing it , it has been approved and mileage is down 5% and performance is down 6%" or something along those lines. It would definitely be in VW's best interest to fix as many as possible as opposed to buying them back (to a point but certainly the 2015's). At this moment you have 24 months to decide if you want the fix or the buyback and they have 2 years to come up with a fix. If there is no fix you will be required to sell back your vehicle. Not participating is not currently an option. If I understood the court docs correctly yes you can opt out of the current settlement (money) but opting out of the court resolution of the vehicles is not an option. Unless something surfaces pretty soon about the 2015 fix I believe I will be selling back. Again I love the car, performance and mileage and would have preferred that this not come up and I would have just gone on driving and enjoying my vehicle. Since that is not the case and with the buyback I have essentially driven the vehicle for 2 years and 40k miles without paying for it (yes fuel and maintenance and licensing) but the vehicle itself no. Whether I like the whole deal or not I do think VW has come to the table with a reasonable resolution whether it was their own design or forced upon them I don't know.

IMO if there are any enterprising young individuals out there, they would be going through the computer code on these cars line by line & offer an "upgrade" to VW's upgrade (whatever & whenever that may be) at a later date.

Yes, there is the Malone Tune out their today that works, my son has this on his 2013 GTI. His car runs great and he has not decided on what he wants to do as of yet, keep his car or sell it back.

I have read the class action booklet that VW sent out and it seems that you can withdraw from the class action lawsuit on or about 1 June 2018 (page 17 of the booklet question 39), if no emission modification has been approved by the EPA. Or if you do not want to have the vehicle fixed because the emission fix may be harmful to the drivability of the car. If that's the case we will continue to drive her car in it's current state. Our state does not require diesel emission testing of any kind.

Just throwing this out there. Has anyone confirmed what is going to happen to parts availability when the buyback process is over. Basically, has VW stated that they will continue to produce parts for a model they have pulled out of use?

Oh yes, I'm well aware of Mark Malone.
He does (IMO) the BEST tune on TDI's.

VW is doing the updates since a couple of months in europe now and they claim there is NO downside with it.
No power loss, same milage, same lifetime for other components of drivetrain.

In europe there is also no buy-back or any other giveaway for the owners around or planned.
Only the free update is available.

But that said, it is in the owners decission to made the upgrade or let it be, it is not mandatory to the owner to see the dealers computer.

So see, big differences between old world and new world.
