VW to offer 2. 0-liter, four-cylinder diesel in Passat this year

By RALPH KISIEL | Automotive News

Volkswagen of America Inc. will offer a diesel engine in its Passat sedan this year.

The automaker offers a diesel engine in the Jetta, Golf and New Beetle. VW sold 31,220 diesel-equipped cars in the United States in 2002 - 14. 6 percent of the 213,199 combined sales of those three models.

The Passat sedan is VW's second best seller in the states, behind the Jetta.

Sales of VW's 90-hp diesel engine surged in the first half of 2001 as consumers bought all the diesel-powered Jettas, New Beetles and Golfs in the face of soaring gasoline prices. Sales of VW's turbocharged direct injection (TDI) engine peaked in May 2001, the same month the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline soared to $1. 71 in the United States.

Dealers said they could have sold twice as many diesel vehicles had they been available.

The Passat will be equipped with a 2. 0-liter, four-cylinder engine using the latest version of the TDI, generating 134 hp. Jens Neumann, chairman of VW's North American region, said the Passat TDI should be in dealerships late this year.

Thanks for the post. I just sent it to our daughter that was wanting a diesel the other day. That would make a really cool wifes car

Wife wants a TDI New Beatle. She is driving a 1995 Toyota Landcruiser with 120K miles on it. From what I have read about the Volkwagon quality issues the 120K+ mile Landcruiser will give me more trouble free miles than a new TDI Beatle :( Figure it is not worth it since she only drives 8-10K miles per year. Fuel mileage saving would not make up for the cost difference in the two vehicles let alone dependablity. Plus the Landcruiser is way cooler than a YELLOW New Beatle :p

What are the quality issues?

Are they diesel or carbody related?

The diesel gets great reports, its the car (New Beatle), sounds like a lot of little things, like electric windows etc. plus poor service, dealer has a hard time fixing stuff. Sounds familar doesn't it :( I went on several web sites and it did not sound good for the NB. Most of the owners of the diesel NB loved the motor and did not have many complaints. Sorry I should of explained it better in my first post.

I wouldnt hold my breath.

I wanted a diesel 5 speed Passat in 1997. I'm still waiting for it. :-laf

Dealer: It will be 2 or 3 more months.

Me: OK, I'll be back.

3 months later, same thing, then 3 more and 3 more. "F" it.

That's when I bought the CTD, never looked back.

Yep, that's familiar! :(

I love my Cummins, too bad it's wrapped up in a DODGE... .

I's just telling all my friends tonight... "If they offered the TDI in the Passat, that will be my next car"... and low and behold look what I find on the TDR. Of course, it'll be for the wife whenever I end up with one (not for quite a while however) but it will be BOMBed! :) I can't wait now!

Almost put a grand down for a special build Jetta wagon TDI. Now it looks like I'll end up waiting for a Passat wagon TDI unless I can find a benz 300TD.

More interested in the Touareg

The Passat 2. 0L TDI would be nice, if it came in VW's All-wheel-drive version. Wife drive a Subaru Outback and needs 4wheel or AWD.

My wife will need a new car this time next year and am hoping to see what the new Touareg SUV will be like. We are very interested in the V10 TDI that will be available in the Touareg sometime late next year.

Other thing is that I hope VW offeres both of these cars with a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission ... there are NO automatics in my family ... automatic trannys are for wimps says my wife. :p

Wait till fuel prices have settled down for awhile and get the Benz.

I beat the snot out of my NB TDI all the time... ... burnouts, double-clutching / clutchless shifting, stop-light fun, etc... ... and it hasn't even given me an ounce of trouble.

Mine has darn near 110k on it..... and with religious 5k oil changes and 80k timing belt changes... . it'll go for 250k easy.
