Heard a story recently about a fella who bought a can of paint, opened it when he got home and found out he had a gallon of water. Someone had used the paint, replaced it with water and returned it. Guess tampering is something we should watch out for.

I would think you could tell on a can of paint. Being as paint is much thicker than water! I always shake a can of paint to see how settled it is and if I need to have store shake it. Guess that where the saying "Buyer Beware" has evolved over time! Being it bought in store or online, more time wasted due to "theft returns"!

When buying oil filters for my other vehicles....whether at Walmart or auto parts stores, I always open the box to check the filter inside. On two occasions (many years apart) while intending to buy a Mobil 1 filter, I opened the box and there was a Fram inside.

Distilled water in the DEF tank does no harm. Sure, it will dilute the DEF and throw an alert but does no harm. I run distilled water in my tuned Ecodiesel. When I need the dealer I return to the stock tune, drain the DEF tank of distilled water, replace with DEF and it's back to normal stock. As said above, DEF is 32.5% urea, the rest is water. Most Rams alert when DEF deteriorates to 22% urea. You can run 2.5 Gal DEF to 1 Gal Distilled Water = 24%, code and error free.

I thought deionized water was supposed to be used in the DEF tank, not distilled?

@sag2 what percentage did your ‘18’s alarm go off at?

Deionized and distilled are basically two different ways to arrive at the same water quality.....usually. Distilled is more likely to end up cleaner that D.I. but it is not always the case and the differences would be negligible. Regardless, they are both exceptionally pure and perfectly fine in the DEF tank.

The Peak blue DEF I have bought was in a box that inhibited tampering. If there could be a question, either don't buy it, or use a $25 refractometer such as the one I got from Amazon to check it.

I understand deionized to be distilled water that has has all the dissolved minerals removed. So DI should always be more pure than distilled.

Not according to google.

Slightly misspoke. DI water isn’t distilled first, but should still be more pure than distilled.

I buy distilled water for my humidor and it certainly still has minerals in it, thou much less than standard tap water.

DEF is made with DI water, not distilled water.

Funny, google told me that… along with last knowledge from school. :D
The way I understand it is distilled can be purer, depending on how many times it is distilled. Google also says you can drink distilled but not deionized, and deionized can be corrosive. Lots to read about the two processes. Interesting how we get on these subjects when the thread is about DEF.

Little deeper into google they don’t start the same, but deionized is generally more pure and used for many purposes, DEF being just one. Depending on the water source and level of distillation you may be able to get a more pure distilled water but to go to the store and by one the DI will be more pure.

There are some possible risks to drinking deionized water, but it’s also generally safe to drink thou it may have some effects on minerals in your body. The purest distilled water would likely have the same effects due to a lack of minerals.

It came up talking about DEF because you mentioned using distilled water with DEF, when it should be DI water.

You are technically correct as DEF is made with DI water. Any tuner will say OK to use distilled water, I've never heard of one saying to use DI water. Lots of tuned trucks use distilled with no harm. Our SCR system probably can't tell the difference. Don't tell my truck I've been mistreating it :)
