Ride 3500 SRW vs 2500

Local dealer has two new Rams. One 2500, and a 3500 SRW. Both trucks, I gotta admit, are beautiful. Fit and finish is excellent.

I had a Dosimeter (value $1000... high end unit) with me and asked the sales guy if he'd let me take sound level measurement on their truck and compare to mine.

Microphone placed on top of right front tire under wheelwell of both trucks, at idle. Both truck engines warm. Both trucks parked next to each other.

03 Ram = 82. 9 dBA

01 Ram = 92. 3 dBA

9. 4 dBA difference is huge... . maybe 75-80% quieter. Someone with more knowledge correct me.

I also heard the 03 slow accelerate across the parking lot. Exhaust note from the 4" stock muff and pipe is nice. Straight-piped or with high flow muffler will probably give these new trucks a unique character because all you'll hear is exhaust note with little competition from the engine.

I got to see one at Munice, and if you want to know what they sound like follow these instructions... .

  1. Get a bicycle
  2. Sit bicycle upside-down. (so that the handlebars, and seat are holding it up)
  3. find a deck of playing cards
  4. remove a single card from the deck(important)
  5. propel the pedles of the bike so that the back wheel is spinning
  6. while back wheel is spinning take card and place the edge of it in the spokes of the wheel
  7. keep propeling as long as desired untill your ears have had enough

    [/list=1]

From my years in audio, a 10dB drop is 1/2 as loud to the human ear. In order for something to be "twice" as loud, the dB's need to be 10 units higher. 9. 4 is close enough. That is one quiet motor!

ACTUALLY, I'm pretty sure *6 db* is half/twice as loud - but who's counting... :p

And say - isn't this the same bunch of fellas pointing, laughing and making vulgar noises at the Duramax guys for THEIR enthusiasm over THEIR "quiet diesel"... ?:p ;) :D

That's OK guys, here's ONE poor ignorant slob who STILL loves his "excessive DB" '02 Cummins - at least you'll HEAR me coming when I pass ya in the hills!:p :D

"Say , did anyone get a dB reading on that white flash that just went zipping by?"

I think we are enthused about our CUMMINS diesels because they run so well for so long, not because of the noise they make. And, you have to catch me to pass me, so good luck. If you guys are out here to trash our new trucks, go to the Ford or Chevy forums. They love guys like you over there.

Columbo Chrysler has a 3500 DRW HO 6 Spd,which I test drove on wed night. It is hidden in the back,but with a bit of beggin I got to take it for a run. It really is quiet. There is a 02 DRW HO right next to it for comparison,night and day difference.

Truck was very nice to drive,smooth,and the new body and gauges felt very Superdutyish,but the seats were terrible. It is just a base model,no options.

The front grille was unpainted ?? Are they supposed to be this way ? Everything else was body color (red),but the grille was a dark grey primer (dull),with a black insert. Maybe they screwed up and forgot to paint it ?

BTW,if you do drop by,leave the 02 DRW alone,I hope to be picking it up soon,if I can swing a few new contracts for this winter season :)

dB conversion

From what I recall in working with fiberoptic transmitters converting output power from dB to milliwatts, the rule was that for every 3dB, the output power was doubled (or halved, depending on if you were adding or subtracting the dB). So if there is a 9 dB difference, the new motor is roughly 1/8th as loud. (Of course, I could be wrong :rolleyes: )

By the way, my wife already caught on to me today when I was mentioning how I know she hates how loud my truck is and the new ones are much quieter..... she called me on it right away!:D

I Know I didn't belong , down there, but I checked the RAM: 2G forums, I couldn't find the 'Wanna know how LOUD the 02- Cummins is?' thread.....

Did I miss something???

From my previous job, I recall 10db being the amount needed for the human ear to perceive something as being twice as loud or quiet.

Columbo Chrysler is in the 7/400 auto mall (just off weston rd),and they have the 2003. I have been to every dealer in the GTA in the past few days,and Columbo is the only one with a 2003 diesel on the lot. Trying to track down a few leftover 02's for a good price.

Not to beat the dB thing to death, but here is how I was told it breaks down:

It takes twice the power to gain 3 dB. 3 dB is the minimum increase that the human ear can hear. In other words, if you heard one speaker playing 95 dB and one playing 97 dB, you'd think they were equally loud. But if you heard one playing 95 dB and one playing 105 dB, you'd think the 105 dB speaker was twice as loud.

Take a hypothetical home loudspeaker with a sensitivity of 90 dB. The sensitivity is measured at 1 meter distance with one watt of power. Here is how the chart would look for a power/dB scale:

1W=90dB

2W=93dB

4W=96dB

8W=99dB

16W=102dB

etc.

If loud is what you want when it comes to audio, a higher sensitivity speaker is needed. Clear as mud?

unpainted grill

Didn't ya know that upainted looking grill was the penality for not paying DC the S uper L uxury T ax? They want everyone to know that anyone who buys a SL didn't do their part to boost DC's earnings. :D ;) :D

'03 AWOL

Got an info package from DC in the mail about the new Rams. Went to the local dealership; NO NEW RAMS. Have to wait until later this month or Oct. I'm not really in the market for a new truck now, but it can't hurt to just look, can it?;)

I'd be curious as to your source? Twice or 1/2 the power is not equal to twice or 1/2 the sound or loudness. The human ear hears in logarithmic porogression. Therefore, 10 times the power equals twice the sound.

Clarity

MJawsman hit it exactly right.

Some of you guys are confusing POWER with AUDITORY PERCEPTION.

3dB is absolutely TWICE the "power".

The difference is that your EARS do not PERCEIVE twice the power as being twice as loud.

What power difference do your ears perceive to be twice as loud?

10 times the power! = 10dB.

A 3dB increase in "power" is only barely noticable in your PERCEPTION of how loud the increase was.

Now having said that, that new motor being 10dB quieter is probably likely what they were shooting for, ie "Make it half as loud"!.

YUP - MJ is correct, I was wrong (OUCH! that hurt!):D

Approaching senility and momentary confusion over db and "S" units overpowered me... ;) :D
