Wanted some advice as to the best, (safest with no damage), way to reach 300 hp's. 12v with 137,000 meticulously maintained miles, newly installed DTT Auto transmission. Everything else is stock.

Thanks,

Want to reach 300 hp

Bsurgi,

Welcome to the TDR.

And the need for speed.

The trans was a great starting place. ;)

A triple disc would have been a good addition to that mod!!!!

The first thing is always guages to monitor what's going on in your motor. Your decision is pillar mount or dash mount. Your choice.

The 3,000 gov & afc spring kits are the next step. :p best bang for your buck!!!!

The fuel plate swap is another step.

But a cheap fix is to move your existing plate & afc full forward to help with more fuel. [ more fuel, more power] . Oo.

Or you can grind your own fuel plate [ its not that hard].

Air intake & exhaust is next to be addressed.

Remove your rubber ring thru the fender is cheap help.

BHAF filter with outerwears is good. Build your own mounting bracket.

A 4" exhaust muffler optional is next.

Till then, remove your cat & muff for cheap help.

The injectors & turbo are next to judge where you want your $$$ to go.

The timing is important issue to deal with as well.

Now sit down & talk it out where you want to spend & how much your budget will afford. Plan it out now will save some money later.

If you need anything else just pm me to talk.

Everyone will help you with your truck.

Good Luck,

WAYNES WORLD

Again welcome to the TDR You are one of the few unlike me who started things on the right track with a quality transmision perfect. Waynes World gave you an excellent list on what to do now i will give you my OPINIONS.

1. Gauges Pyro, boost are a must transmission temp very valuable and strongly recomended about $300. 00 give or take with an a pillar

2. TST cam plate your choice 6 or 10 $230. 00 or grind your own free but im to chicken

3. straight pipe exhaust let it breath a little easier and might help a bit with egts

4. BHAF or AFE intake $40. 00-230. 00

5. 3k GSK i would jump on this one real fast because Piers has them on sale for only $100. 00 a major steal

6. 370 injectors AWESOME about $350

7. timing 15-16 i paid $100 you might have a friend who can help you out though.

8. 16 cm non wastegated housing

and of course there is more with my 160 pump 95 i dynod 344 HP 677 TQ with teh items listed above on a stock transmission with a shift kit you have a 180 pump so you would put down a little more, EGTs barely hit 1400 at the end of the 1320. Hope this helps and happy bombing.

Bsurgi,

OOPS, Sorry, forgot to stress the importance of the KDP. :{

Kill that pin as soon as possible. You could destroy a good motor with that pin!!!!

Then sit down, do your homework, plan the project out as best you can, the bombs away. Oo.

Grinding your own plate isn't as hard as I thought. Just pm people for help. WE ALL HAVE BEEN THERE. :--)

Have fun !!!!!!

Great advice

Thanks JKouzez and Waynes World for the great advice and starting place. I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions in the future.

Thanks again

242 Hp, 540 Tq

is what i just dyno'd. With only a 10 plate (home ground) full forward, Afc star wheel turned, a BHAF, 3 GSK kit, and straight exhaust. I also have a Boost Elbow.

My EGT's hit 1500* pre-turbo towards the end of the run, but they NEVER get above 1300* on the street running as hard as i want, or hauling as much weight as i can.

Good Luck

Curtis

Bsurgi,

I-6DZL / Curtis  just gave you an idea of what little you need to start with on your goal. Oo.

Good starting point.

Curtis, is there a 4" or turbo in your future to bring those egt's down?

They worked for me. Oo.

I have to push the 100 mph to get above 1200. By then, I'm busy looking for the red lights. :{

Ain't we got fun????

WAYNES WORLD

No a turbo nor exhaust is in the works for me. At least not yet. I can still tow VERY VERY easily without having to watch egt's. I just towed 9,000 pounds up a pretty good hill, foot to the floor and had NO egt problem what-so-ever. The egt's topped out at 1200* and i hit 85 to 87 at the top of the hill. I don't have any explaination as to why my egt's were so high on the dyno, and not while hauling. But it is very easy to get 300 horses. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to put a diff turbo housing or turbo itself along with 4 or 5" exhaust, but i'm selling the rig.

Good luck, have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Curtis

I-6DZL,

Close your eyes & think what this truck would do with a couple of add ons. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

I know it will sell soon for you! :D

Whats next on the truck line for you???

WAYNES WORLD

I'm at 300/700 with very little effort.

custom grind plate-forward

timing set to 14. 2

4" exhaust

Scotty II

The pump and injectors are stock 215hp.

the stock exhaust is good until about 400 HP as far as cooling goes you will see a bigger difference with a 16 housing, on a totally stock truck i have heard that you will actually loose power by going to 4 inch.

JKouzez,

I had no loss in hp with the 4" exhaust. It will all flow better when combined with the BHAF. It did for me. :p

Think of a pump flowing more without restrictions. Oo.

wcjp,

You have nice hp & tq figures. Did you move the plate at all? :D

I would suggest the timing bump a little, say 15-16. 5 range. ;)

Could there be a boost elbow in your future?

We are having fun now!!

WAYNES WORLD

A #4 plate will get you very close to 300HP, probably in the 280-290 range. It is a very good driving truck too IMHO.

lsfarm has a #4 in his 180 pump 12 valve and overall I think he is very happy with the way the truck runs. DTT transmission, bumped timing, 24v intercooler, AFE Intake, and #4 plate, and a GSK are the only mods to that truck (at least the last I knew that all that was done to it) and he is still running the stock exhaust. Maybe he will chime in here to give his impressions on the #4.

Of course there are other ways to get to 300HP and possibly more favorable for some, but I'm just throwing this out there as an option.

oh well that is just what i have heard i dont know from expirience or anything, i was told it would not be a significant difference and you would only know if you were on a dyno. it makes sense though less backpressure is a turbos best friend

Cooker i don't think LsFarm ever bumped the timing on his 12v. Needless to say that truck runs awesome!!! If you have the trans or the clutch, that's certainly the way to go. Also a bigger ex. housing would only help.

WaynesWorld

I do hope my truck will sell soon, it's been a very good truck for me. LOTS of new parts :( I'm not asking to get rich off of it either, just kind of a reimbursement of the new parts and 100% new paint job.

I have my sights set on a 98 QC LB 12v 4x4 preferably with a DTT already in place. But will definately consider all options.

Later

Curtis

Great running truck.

Ryan what all has been done to your truck ?? Too bad you couldn't make it to the dyno event!!

Curtis

Moving the plate and AFC full froward

Does anyone have detailed instructions for moving the plate and adjusting the AFC?

Bsurgi

Timing Done

Hi Curtis, Ryan, within three hours of parking the '98 12v in the shop the KDP was staked in place and the timing bumped.

Then I rebuilt and DTT-upgraded the trans.

The #4 plate and 3GSK make the truck run very strong. With the stock HX turbo the spool-up is very fast and the temps still stay under control unless I'm really asking for another 'very fast truck certificate' from the police.

If I pull a long hill with 10K behind me at 80+ mph, the temps can get over 1400* Obviously I don't run it that hot normally, I was just checking it out.

Regular driving it is hard to see over 1100*

One of these days I'll install the 4" system that is waiting on the shop floor.
