I had initially started watching this item on ebay since it didn't have a reserve, but then forgot about it until the auction ended. Was this a good deal? I have not a single use for it but the 'coolness' meter was being pegged. At the very least, my kids would have loved playing on it. Would this require a special license to drive back home (without a trailer)?

Your neighbors would love you if you parked that thing in your driveway but it would certainly be a great conversation piece. You could use it to pull any fifth wheel travel trailer as is. All you would need would be a seven pin electrical receptacle and a brake controller.

For private use it would be legal for anyone with an ordinary driver's license to drive. You might have some trouble getting a liability insurance policy issued on it but you could drive it.

Thanks Harvey. That is interesting about the driver's license. I've also been hearing rumours of trucks having to be retrofitted with new emissions controls in Kalifornia which could possibly be an issue. As far as the driveway, no one can see the top of mine from the street.

If it's a early Multifuel engine I would say stay away from it you can get the later Cummin's powered 5 ton tractor's fairly reasonable go to Government Surplus Auctions at Government Liquidation and you can bid on 1 straight from the Gov .

I wasn't thinking about you living in KA when I replied earlier. It might be very difficult to register that truck in KA.

I occasionally read on the HDT forum of the escapees website. Many of them use retired and converted HDTs for pulling their big fifth wheels. In most states they can install a tiny refrigerator, sink, and 110 vac electrical plug and register it as an RV. Some KA residents have reported they finally gave up. They tried battling the mindless KA DOT (KALTRANS?) for months and finally gave up. If it has to be registered commercial then liability insurance premiums and registration fees are off the chart and a CDL might be required.

when you get 1 from the Gov they run anywhere from 1500 on up and most of the time you can jump start them and drive them home Don't look for 1 from the bases on the coast of ca. they have rust issues Barstow is a good base they sell a lot and most of the time there is good shape . Remember the multifuel turbo'd engines are slow no matter what you do but fun
