What is your situation with the ‘13-’18 water pump recall 17-562? Don’t call us, we’ll call you?
Here at the TDR, that is the communication that Geno’s Garage employee Brandon Parks has received from Chrysler/Ram on his 2016 truck. From inspection of his water pump we know it will be one that is to be replaced. The official recall part number for the water pump is C52H T512 AA.
A Cummins replacement water pump is offered at $49.95. It started life as part number 5473057. The latest part number is 5521882. However, what good is the low price if it is often on backorder. (Yes, Geno's Garage has them in stock, but stock does occasionally get backordered.)
We were able to purchase a Mopar 68414058AA. It is a re-boxed Cummins number 5473057. We also did a part search of the Mopar inventory and found over 400 water pumps in stock at distribution centers. Wait, I understand there is now a 68414058AB. We haven’t been able to put our hands on one yet. Likely it is a re-boxed Cummins 5521882.
Let’s review. The good numbers are:
Cummins – 5473057 superseded to 5521882
Mopar – 6814058AA superseded to 6814058AB
Recall number CS2H T512 AA
Got it?
In the meantime, it seems to me that should you want to replace your water pump, you could order the Cummins 5521882 ($49.95 @ Geno’s Garage) or Mopar 68414058AB (price about $180.00) from a Mopar dealer, do the repair and then file for reimbursement. Be advised, as you can see in the photograph below, the parts do look different. All have the bearing “vent” hole at 11 o’clock, but we could not find the weep hole in either the 5473057/5521882 and/or 6814058AA/AB.
By the way, the Cummins and Mopar parts were made in Italy. The official recall part number (T512 AA) is made by “Concentric” the folks who originally made the faulty water pump. However, before we bash Concentric, think of how many B-Series water pumps they have made since 1982. Sometimes mistakes happen. Our guess is that Concentric has some “skin” in this recall.
There you go, a proactive way to take action. Replace the water pump and file a claim for reimbursement. Kind of like the Disney World express pass, right? Otherwise, don’t expect to cut-in-line and be first. Recalls do take time.
