Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) water pump

I hope Im wrong, but I dont think so. Im probably going to have to replace my water pump soon. I got a price from a dodge dealer, and a price from a couple of NAPA stores.



Dodge dealer: $350. 00



NAPA (both) $51. 00



Other than price, is there any reason to get the water pump from dodge ? I just really cant imagine why dodge is 7 times more expensive.

And from Cummins (new, not reman), it is $150. 00



So, I would get it from cummins. But again, other than price, is there any reason to get the cummins part rather than one from NAPA ? Does anyone know if the cummins part is made in the US ? Im guessing the NAPA water pump is made in china or korea or someplace like that.

My NAPA pump has been fine for a year. I can change several at those prices! and, I have a warantee with it.

fox, I believe that that is a lifetime warranty at NAPA isn't it? My daughter works at NAPA corporate in Indy so I also would get a discount.

A lifetime warranty is grand, but it still blows when you have to donate your time and labor to change that defective part, several times in some cases.



Been there, done that. Now I buy OEM unless it is priced right out of the market.



Ask yourself this question...

How long did the OEM pump last?? 200,000 miles or better???

$350 to $50 is a huge difference where I would have probably gone for the NAPA part. But, since the cummins part is only $150, I think Ill go with that one.

And to clarify, by OEM I meant Cummins, not Dodge.



The Cummins pump may be made in the USA, it may not.



Cummins has been a global company way longer than most, has production facilities all over the world and has a fairly good handle on quality.

I just replaced my water pump with 85,000 miles on it. I purchased mine from Genos for $38. It is made by Gates and says made in China on it so I will see how long it lasts. They are easy to replace so I can buy a lot of them for $38 each, plus I carry a spare now. The OEM pump that came on the truck said made in England on it.

That water pump is a VERY simple pump. Shop for price and you will be fine.

15 to 20 minutes will change a cummins water pump. I guess you are right if you are out on the road in BFE and it fails.

My original lasted 160,000 miles.

I talked to someone last year who bought a water pump from autozone or orreilys or checker, don't remember and it failed very soon.

Cummins did offer a Reman pump for these "B" engines, but they have superseded the number to new only.



I rant about aftermarket parts because 90% of the time the stuff doesn't last.



I bought a new heater motor from Carquest in March for the '97 as it failed and my dealer didn't have one that day. I was cold so against my better judgement I bought it and put it in.

The heater motor in the truck that failed was original, by the way, and quit working at 202,000 miles.



This morning on the way in to work the Carquest motor is squealing so bad I had to shut it off. Now I have to take time to change that tomorrow along with the 27 other projects that need to be done around the house this weekend.



They will warranty the motor, I know. But what about the hassle??



That is my point with some of these lifetime warranty parts.

Replacement of junk parts from auto parts stores comes with a cost, even with free lifetime warranties. Even if you do all your own work and don't pay for labor by the hour you're out forced changes in your plans, possibly a highway breakdown, lost coolant, mess under the hood, greasy hands, bruised knuckles, working outside in extreme heat or cold, and TIME.

Cheap parts are never cheap.

Thats always been my philosophy. That is unless the OEM parts get really crazy in price like I was quoted from dodge. But, for only $150, Ill be getting a pump from cummins. I have no intention of changing a water pump on the side of the road if I can help it. The cummins part may not last any longer than the chinese part from napa. But, the odds are better. Thats worth a hundred bucks to me.

Hm. Looked on the internet and it seems the cummins water pump is made in china too.

That is most likely why the Reman is no longer available.



It's becoming routine now, bought a new AC Delco water pump for the Northstar last year and that was made in China. Was a well built part so I guess we now have good China built parts and crappy China built parts.

The thread is a little old, but on NAPA's website they list their top water pump as made by Delphi and as an OEM for Dodge. $70.

My original has almost 240,000 on it before it started leaking.
