I've decided to move the SPA temp. sender from it's current location, monitoring fuel temp ( about as exciting as watching the ambient outside air temp. , it's previous location  ) to watch the coolant temperature. If nothing else it will interesting to watch the temps. climb while below 140 degrees or when the block heater is on. Is there any other source I can tap into that might be more easily accessible, other than the plug at the rear of the block, behind the MAP plug ??? If not, does anyone know what size the plug is behind the MAP ??? The SPA sender is 1/8" NPT, if it matters. TIA .

Scott,

On the right side of the valve cover there are four or five 1/2” (3/8” drive) NPT plugs in the head. You can use any of these.

Remove them when the engine is cold and you will get only the slightest amount of coolant over-flow.

Thanks BD !!! I know the plugs you speak of and that will be much easier to access. Good info on the cold engine and less loss of coolant as well. Just have to find a 1/2" to 1/8" NPT coupler, which shouldn't be too difficult, thanks again.

Temp sender

There is a couple there that is 1/8" fpt. I used the front one so it would be easy to joim the wire loom that my temp sensor in the top of the oil filter housing uses. I'm a guageaholic. I just like to know whats going on, ya know.

Scott,

I just finished a SPA installation with engine oil temperature and noticed the 1/8" plug directly behind the thermostat. Seems to be enough clearance for a temperature bulb.

Turboman,

I clamped the temperature harness to the turbo line and from there, it was a straight shot to the PCM harness under the hood seal :D

Thanks BD and Turboman !!! I checked and I think I see the plug you described except mine appears to be 1/4" NPT ??? Maybe I'm looking at the wrong plug, but it's on the block, above the oil filter. Does the plug you are describing have a allen key drive ???? That's the one I am looking at on the block.

I have my DiP. oil temp gauge rigged the same as you guys, harness is zip tied to the turbo line and a straight run back the harness under the hood seal. I'll look again tomorrow, but I already have a sender right behind the thermostat, OEM water temp ???

Scott,

Yes. The plug we are referring to is the one directly behind the OE Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.

However, after closer examination, the plug does seem to be 1/4" Looks like you will still need a Hex Bushing (Male x Female):( McMaster-Carr has a 1/4" x 1/8" NPT Threaded Bushing made of Zinc-Plated Steel for only $0. 38 Each, P/N: 4638K651. For the other plugs, same material, use P/N: 4638K636 for $0. 73 Each. The shipping will cost more than the Hex Bushing:rolleyes:

Thanks again guys, good to see(no pun intended) that my pushing 40ish eyes are not completely DOA. I already have a 1/4" to 1/8" reducer, so I believe that I am good to go. Just gotta find the time  .

Thanks again

Thanks again

Got the SPA sender moved from fuel temp to water temp today, used the 1/4" NPT hex plug as the source, works like a champ. I wish I had this in before the start of winter, it would have been interesting to see the coolant temp at start up after the block heater was plugged in when the outside temps dipped low.

Thanks again
