Need to replace my waterpump this weekend. What brand is everyone using?Cummins OEM or aftermarket. Will also do t-stat and flush coolant. How much coolant-7. 5 gals?How about the belt-which brand is best?Ive heard some make a lot of noise and skip ribs.

You can't go wrong using Geno's garage. Best prices and service. I would replace the belt and the tensioner pulley as well.

Me too, hard to beat OEM.



We buy the Cummins brand for a reason, why burden it with cheap parts?

You think Cummins is pricey, try a dealer. List is over $300. With all respect to GG, whom I've dealt with many times, I'm not a fan of using a bootleg water pump on such an expensive investment. Perhaps in the future they will offer the OEM pump as they do other parts.

A water pump is the most basic mechanical piece of equipment on a vehicle. And to top it off, our water pump is even more basic than basic. $46 out the door for a brand new (not rebuilt) water pump from Advance Auto. 9000 miles on it already and working like a champ.

The Gates waterpump seems to be a much better pump than the stock one. And Geno's has the best price.

Most of the issues I have with stock parts is becuase they are geared towards emissions or ease of assembly, I find it hard to believe that Cummins cut corners on a water pump.

The only corner they cut on mine was they forgot the gold plating that I thought I paid for.

Because I had a WP failure on the road at around 170k, I bought an Autozone water pump and replaced the OE in a hotel parking lot. I then bought a Geno's Garage Bosch replacement because of all the "reports" of these failing non-Cummins parts.

That was 65k miles ago, and the Autozone version is still going strong; the Bosch replacement is stowed behind the seat. Although, at that time, I would have rather had the OE part; at $35 the Autozone pump is hard to beat and proving its not as failure prone as indicated. I would not hesitate to run another one.

OE Pump

My OE water pump is leaking as I type this. I only have 81,000 miles on the engine. I have done two radiator flushes and coolant changes (Zerex G05) since owning the truck. So, just how good is the OE pump? Not that great in my opinion (may be an isolated incident, however).

I priced a new pump thru an online dealer, way too much ($215 plus shipping). I have yet to check with a local diesel parts company (MHC Kenworth), but from past experience I know they're going to be pricey as well.

Therefore, what I'd really like to know; is there really that much quality difference between the local parts store (Advance Auto, NAPA, etc) and the OE supplier (Cummins, Dodge)? Who makes the pump for Cummins/Dodge? How complicated could it be to manufacture a quality water pump?

Right now, the leak isn't too bad, so I have time to do a little research before purchasing a new pump. It's a little disappointing to have a pump fail with so little miles on the engine. Although it's man made, what can I expect, right?

Any help identifying a viable, quality replacement part would be appreciated.

The replacement for my '03 (which didn't last as long as yours) was made by Concentric, who also made the original. I believe the original was made in the UK, and the replacement in the US.



It would appear to me that with the proper press, you could disassemble the pump, clean the seal, and replace the bearings.



I have never actually seen an aftermarket replacement, so I can't comment on its differences from the OEM part.

My OE pump on the '93 went 125,000 before it was replaced. The second replacement OE made it another 202,000 it will be replaced this week. Over the counter at Cummins out here in the west is $137 and change, plus they are taking in cores now.

I appreciate the replies.

It's kind of odd how some people get longevity out of thier water pump, while others don't. It doesn't appear that a failure is related to lack of maintenance either.

I wished I had a Cummins dealer in town, but there isn't one close by. It looks like Geno's could be an option. I also checked with Advance Auto Parts today and they sell one for my 2004 for $50. It's new and is made by GMB. I'm not familiar with company, although the part carries a lifetime warranty.

I found one on eBay as well. It's made by Alliant, and they want $100 or best offer. So, there are a few options. I plan on checking with NAPA tomorrow too. I figure I may as well replace both hoses, idler pulley, and tensioner while I'm at it. I replaced the thermostat in October, so it is okay.

What I have found over the Years,Is NOT to drop the factory Fill (Coolant) Sooner then 5/6 years regardless of mileage, the Factory fill has additive(s) that I don't think can be Purchase. Just a thought and My experience.
