The Gates Pump has a larger shaft and bearings along with what seems to be a beter seal. Also I found the size of the impeller to be larger. Geno's has it for the right price the stock Dodge one must be made out of GOLD for what they ask for it only it don't last.

Grey Wolf - OKC is about 180 miles from me. I guess I could call and see if they ship. I will check them out too.

TCDiesel - I understand what you're saying. However, I thought Zerex G05 was Chrysler/Dodge/Cummins spec'd coolant... ? If it truly is, shouldn't it have the same additives?

EDan - I appreciate the info on the Gates. Based on your earlier post, I checked out Geno's website. It seems that their prices are competitive and should be a viable option.

My goal is to purchase parts that will meet or exceed OEM specs, while at the same time saving some money. And if I can get parts from auto parts suppliers (some of which who carry the OEM'd parts) and avoid the cost associated with buying from dealer/Cummins, I'd prefer to do that.

I appreciate all the responses.

I don't know,Most OTR Carriers don't drop the factory fill until 5 years regardless of Mileage. Some of those trucks have 500k or more by then.

Most OTR coolant is designed for longer life than the G05. Cat EC-1 is a 600K mile coolant.

Thou the OE spec for coolant is 60 months or 100K. When you flush it the bottle says 60 mo or 150K.

My first gave up at 83k sounded awful, didn't think I was going to limp it to the dealer. Replaced under warranty so not sure of the brand, has been doing fine though with 30k on it. Gates is a quality manufacturer. I wouldn't have a problem using their parts unless proven to be grossly defective.

TCDiesel - If I understand what you're saying, you're referring to coolant used for heavy duty diesel application (OTR). My light duty truck is not the same nor are the fluids spec'd for it. However, it wouldn't hurt to use the same coolant as the OTR guys. Although my truck will never see 500K plus miles in 5/6 years, or in its lifetime for that matter. I figure I'm well protected if I use use Zerex G05 and change it every three years, regardless of mileage in between. I know it's overkill, but I like working on my truck. Well, except when something fails... like a water pump.

Again, thanks for the responses.

Here's another thought, Factory spec is 5 year/100k,The same time period as the engine warranty. I never change under 5 years. I have not replace a water pump in all my vehicles (Personal/company) in over 20 years, some I have kept for over 10 years and 150k.

Ford (May) denied warranty if the factory coolant is Changed (Case By Case) within the warranty time frame.

Just a note for everyone. The Cat EC-1 coolant is Chevron Delo ELC. The service life on it is 750,000 miles, 8 years, or 12,000 hours whichever comes first.

Testing for glycol level is with a refractometer. There is also a test to check the additive effectiveness ( I am sorry, but I cannot remember the dog gone name of the test right now ) that is a pre-measured syringe and a chemical test tube.

I run it in everything that I own (Chevron) because coolant service is my very last favorite chore. I would rather do front bearings on a 4WD.

And, yes, I do work for a Chevron Distributor.

If it weren't for the fact that HOAT came stock I would have EC1 in my truck, but the 2 aren't comparable and I wasn't in the mood to flush it for 3 days! As it was with over 15 gallons of distilled just for flushing the stuff I drained still had color.

Replaced mine under warranty around 90K at dealer and it only lasted 5-10k. Went with a NAPA pump myself after that for $45 and a lifetime warranty. So yeah, some OEM's last better than others, could have been a bad pump from the dealer who knows. I just didn't feel like trusting the dealer again.
