Looks like Cummins announced way back in Dec 2003 that they are supplying a motor for the 1/2ton pickups. Has this been brought up yet, if so, sorry... . I'm not normal:eek: :D :p

Uhmmmmm... ..... What???? Url please? I'm sure they haven't made any definitive statement to that effect or it would be all over the place, including other websites.

I've long thought that they should put the 3. 9 in the Dakota or the 1/2 ton.

Back when I was in highschool I was trying to figure out how to stuff one in a toyota 4x4 :D

In the new 4 wheel and off road they said that dodge has a hybrid truck to be released in 2005 that is cummins/electric powered. It says that it uses the cummins for take off and the electric once it reaches speed. Its in the front section that has all the new and up coming vehicles

I'll have to take a look at that.

Most hybrids use electric to launch (max torque at 0 rpm) and a gasser to run (mostly for maintaining speed).

That's why hybrids get better mileage in stop and go than on the highway.

The vehicle I have seen was a contractor issue truck with a generator to run a work site from. They had a pic of it some time ago in a 4wheel magazine. It was the 2nd generation body though. So it could finally be through testing and out in the new body style.

Back in October 03 the fleet manager at my local dealer told me that the idea of a 1500 and Dakota diesel was being tossed around, but they were considering a benz engine not cummins. Have not heard anything since.

I understood the hybrids did better in the city because any braking application kicked in alternators to use the motion to generate electric.

It is much easier (and requires less fuel) to keep an object moving at a steady speed. The regenerative braking stores energy in the batteries that is used by the electric motor to accelerate the car. The batteries will die out after a short time depending on the load. A long uphill grade on a hybrid can get exciting (read slow) because the batteries die out and you are left with a 60hp engine to pull you up.

Diesels are the way to go - lots of torque to get things moving, high mpg's with you get to spped.

I have always wished Cummins would make a smaller displacement inline 6, something around 225-275 cubic inches. The 3. 9L would be nice, but when it comes to refinement and smoothness you just can't get a 4-banger diesel to be silky smooth like the 6. Imagine all the uses we could come up with using a small I6.

A buddy of mine knows a guy who put a little 6-cylinder Perkins in a '50s Willys wagon. Approx. 200 cid I6, did it up nice with chrome and expertly detailed. It was one sweet ride, smooth, good power, easy 25-28mpg, would kill to have it!

I worked with an engineer from Ricardo that worked on that project. I think he was at Cummins '99 or '00. He said they had designed a really sweet V6-to be used for the F150/Expedition.

the last word with FORD f-150 diesel is that ford backed out and left the diesel manufacturer with the bill... they sued ford and got a undisclosed settlement... .

Rumors Rumors and more rumors

The way I heard it was Ferd is coming out with a F-150 diesel.

They had a contract with whoever makes the 6. 0 and backed out due to the problems thay have had with the 6. 0.

They-Ferd settled with the 6. 0 makers on backing out of the contract. The contract for the F-150 diesel is up for grabs. Cummins,John Deere and several others were vying for the F-150 diesel contract.

I can't wait for this.

I have grown to like the looks on the 4-dr F-150's

Autobytel newsletter article... are we ready? is the recent rise in the price of fuel without a whimper from our government designed to help usher in a new type of vehicle?

..... Ford and Toyota, have announced concrete plans to sell hybrid SUVs. On the heels of Ford's '04 summer launch of the Escape SUV hybrid, and the Lexus RX400h, will come the Highlander Hybrid, and what we have as a result is a full-bore trend in the making - and a promising sign that the future will include lower reliance on fossil fuel. From Global Warming to Geopolitics and the price at the pump, this is good news for everyone.

... . The Toyota Highlander hybrid version will be available in the spring of 2005, in base and limited three-row seven passenger models. According to Jim Press, executive vice president and COO of Toyota Motor Sales, U. S. A. , in a speech at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the Hybrid Synergy Drive system powering the Highlander was "specifically developed to meet the load-carrying requirements of a midsize SUV. Compared to Prius, the system features a larger-capacity battery that will provide nearly double the power and an all-new high-speed electric motor that will operate at twice the speed, and deliver more than twice the power as the motor in the Prius. Toyota claims that the Hybrid Highlander will produce in the neighborhood of 270 horsepower, and that the hybrid system will improve Highlander acceleration.

... Silverado Trucks will be available in a Hybrid version beginning in 2005

I believe ferd put the kabash on nav. intl. building them a diesel for the f-150 because of cost... not related to issues with the 6. 0 powersmokes.

Vaughn- we are getting there. The I-5cyl engine in the Volvo XC-90 has been marinized, had the cyl head swapped, and bumped to 18:1 with NO other block changes, and it runs so smooth it truly do not know it is a diesel under the hatch. Heck- half the time you dont know the engine is running!! Looking at the stats, I cant figure why Furd doesnt call their Swedish comrades and suggest a joint venture. 550#s & 163 hp in marine trim FROM 146 CUBES!, torque curve flat across the board at 250lbft , 4 valve, balance shafts, 08 emission without egr, 4000rpm, VGT, compact size, hyd valves, common rail, and of course piston cooling. While the torque may seem low, the goal was to have this engine behave like a gasser. Both #s would probably be too low for the F-150 as it stands, but for another model Furd, or with other technology (or larger engine), it could be a possibilty. I have to wonder why Furd doesnt tap into the resources of one of largest diesel manufacturers in the www. Volvo owns Mack, Deutz, Prevost, Volvo Truck, Bus, Construction & Marine. Ask any trucker on the road and they will tell you how good the truck & engine is. And still they go with IH ?? No doubt the boys in Dearborn were played by IH, it happens. Perhaps the devil they know is better then the one they dont, but they better get their act together before they lose even more market share. They pounded on their chest for years claiming the best selling truck- then their styling dept was castrated, their "JOB1" nonsense was obviously forgotten, the 6. 0 scared many a customer away, and now they stand a chance of failing miserably at the concept of a diesel 1/2 ton. Run Furd guys, run-
